Let the wife have fun playing perfect basic.

Few people are truly cut out for the AP lifestyle.

Inherent advantages of wife (at the casino)

(Having the wife mimic does not address the question: "how can we improve our game?")

She can try the insurance count, but you have already said that she may not want to, and the insurance count is a two-level count. You can see p. 49 of Exhibit CAA for more information, but the insurance count for those who don't know is: 1. Start running count at -4D, where D is the number of decks, 2. Count each Ten as -2 and every other card as +1, 3. Buy insurance when this running count is positive.

There is no true-count conversion, so she really could do it with some practice. However, I am skeptical of this plan, based on your comments. Perhaps she should simply keep a side count. For instance, she could keep a side of Aces. This sounds simple, but given that she does not want to count at all, would you really trust her side count?

There are inherent advantages to having her at the table, even if she is unwilling to do much extra work: 1. More entertaining for both of you, 2. Even when you lose, she will see that Tens and Aces come out when your bets are big, 3. She should be able to play faster than a civilian in that same seat, 4. Between the two of you, you can control three or four spots on the table, thus locking out civilians (who are detrimental to the game conditions), 5. She might be useful for cover, 6. It keeps her from playing slots or other worse games that might tempt her, 7. You can put the action for both of you on her player's card, to preserve your own clean name, 8. A partner is useful to turn the boss, 9. A partner boosts the frequency of payoff errors, 10. She should eavesdrop on the pit for you.

Of course it does. If one player is betting according to the count, and one is betting and playing according to BS, then having her mimic the first player on insurance decisions will improve their game. It will be an improvement, without any extra work on her part.

There have been quite a few occasions over the years
when I have tried to recruit and train a lover or spouse.

All efforts failed miserably.
That is - until I started to pay.
I paid a small hourly wage with
a small % of my winnings added
in order to pique their efforts.

The trick was to supply motivation.
That, and engaging in chitchat re:
what creature comforts they could buy.

this is kind of up my alley, cause my wife has become interested in playing blackjack with me. she doesn't really know basic strategy fully yet, so i just tell her how to play her hand. it's pretty funny because plenty of times she'll say. "what? hit that are you serious? or what? double that are you kidding me?" lmao.
she knows when to bet up by just watching what i bet.
the really problem at my level of play bankroll-wise is that the table min is my unit, so the wife and i playing together can lead to what is essentially two of my units being bet in zero or negative counts. so now because she doesn't fully know basic strategy i may prompt her to take a potty break or what ever when the count is negative. once she learns basic strategy we will be able to alternate taking potty breaks, ect during negative counts.
it is fun though, she really gets a kick out of it when her chip stack goes up and mine doesn't, lol.

shadroch, you're still missing the point. The guy's wife knows BS, and hence could play BS on her own unattended, but when she is playing at the table with her counter husband, it is presumed that she would buy insurance when appropriate, and probably also use counting deviations when he tells her to do so. She's already doing all that. She KNOWS basic strategy, but that doesn't mean that she is playing BS while at the table with her husband. The point is that her play is merely a clone of his, which seems inefficient when there is now a second brain which potentially could be used for some other purpose. Have you ever counted with a partner? What does the second person do?

The most practical thing you can have her do is something women are naturally good at: busting our balls.

You need a signal for her to come and get you out of bad counts. You signal, and she comes over and starts tapping her foot and scowling. You excuse yourself and get up to talk to her, counting all the while, and you end the conversation and go back to the game when the count goes positive again. It will look like a dysfunctional relationship instead of advantage play.

That move has far greater EV than any additional counting
