I play 1-10 on 8 deck and i make money so its not neccessary
Also if your backcounting your spread is effectivly infitity to one sinc eyou are betting zero on all losing hands, if your backcounting you can bet anyting you want and still make SOME money.

first of i think your anecdotal example is accurate matched against the shall we say much less greater degree of anecdotality that simulations offer lol.
and second i'd have to at least interject that one might still lose ones entire bankroll back counting albeit that would be rare if you bet optimal with respect to your bankroll.

check this out a whopping $1.03/hour 1-4 spread for eight deck s17 das lsr
70% pen with 7 players at table 70hands/hour. ror 5.2% $5 unit ten grand roll .

I was being totally serious he asked if 1-16 was neccessary if you avoid negetive counts, i play 1-10 and no neg count and i make money, im just trying to support his notion, I get the feeling you guys dont like me 
no i dont play all, i think iv posted my betting pattern before
and what i meant by bet anythign by back counting, you could bet any small amount not any large amount, as in if you arnt playing at any losing counts then all of the hands will total winnings regardless of how mcuh money you ahve placed on them, an example would be playing 5 dollars a hand but only at winning counts, you have no spread but are expecting to win money. So basically thee is no need for a spread whiel backcounting.

i agree with ZG and mimosine. 1-10 spread for backcounting or wong-out at negative counts will work just fine. but just because 1-10 works fine, if you can get away with (ie dont jepeordize your longevity) 1-16 or even 1-20 and your bankroll can handle it, why not do it?
