Are there other women out there in the same situation?

RorySF I carry what I call my "blackjack bag," which has my players cards, cell phone and bankroll. My bankroll is replenishable and the cell phone can be replaced.

Thanks RorySF,

It's nice to see that you finally registered here and thanks for your input. Yeah, I too have just a "blackjack bag". The purses I use are so small nothing else will fit in them...just room enough for phone, players card and cash, oh and chap stick:p

I do travel at least 80 miles one way to play and also worry about the car breaking down with driving so much. But soon it wil be warm enough to get the motorcycle out then driving that far will be a lot more fun.

I am still leaning towards carrying arms as I am quite comfortable with them and can shoot quite well.

Good luck to you,
Red

Wait, you are a semi professional (or professional? I don't know at all) AP that drives a motorcycle, enjoys shooting guns, and is also a women.

Awesome.

I'll second moo's suggestion about the flashlight; they are excellent tools for defense. A nice bright light can easily blind an attacker for several seconds even during the day, allowing your escape (or followup blow). The best part is, you can carry it with you anywhere, including airplanes, and no one will care.

A good compact "tactical" high-brightness Surefire with a pushbutton switch is ideal, and get a belt loop so it can be "drawn" easily.

They are also excellent for shooing pushy beggars or hustlers, and they can't complain to the cops about an injury.

Knives are good for those who have training, but very, very poor for those who do not. Also, very messy.

Pepper spray, where legal, is an effective followup to the flashlight.

Motorcycle gangs figured this out a LOOOOOONG time ago. If it is good enough for the Hell's Angles, it's good enough for anyone.

Of course they also keep a padlock tied to a bandanna as a makeshift flail and attack in numbers.

But still, heavy duty MAG lights and such are great for blinding and bludgeoning.

Rambo, John Rambo

Remember the scene in one of the Rambo movies where he is putting on all the weapons. Guns, knives, pepper spray, flashlights:laugh:

Prevention is worth an aresenal of cure

A fake wedding ring will keep away MOST men from approaching you. If you keep those chips and cash off the table then one should not be a target for robbing.

Aren't guns in a casino a federal crime or something? Possibly, not a good thing on Indian lands? As an AP one faces a potential back rooming? Being armed with a gun can escalate that? If you face a trial or wish to sue for some reason having a gun may not look good in court in front of a liberal judge? Do you have liberal judges in California? A tribal court might really take issue with it.

No, guns in a casino are perfectly legal unless there is a state statute against it. Probably every casino has a policy against it... but they have a policy against everything else we do, don't they? Just like counting- don't get caught!

It is probably against every tribal law but the worst they can do to a paleface is confiscate the weapon and throw us off their property. As I see it this part is no big deal- if a casino finds out I have a gun it is because I've been illegally tackled by security guards or I had to draw it in a life-threatening situation, so being banned from the casino has either already happened or is the least of my worries. Getting felony weapons possession charges is a big deal and you should not carry in any situation where it is illegal under state or federal law.

Plus you never know when some carpentry may need to be done:laugh:
My wife has the "bag" as well, tiny thing with a wrist chain, for players card, that sessions bankroll, chapstick (for her) and toothpicks (for me).

I would LOVE to have a casino 80 miles from me. I have to drive over 100 miles to the closest one, which takes about an hour and a half, and over two hours if I want to go play Blackjack Switch (only one casino in Northern California has it).

I hear you on driving too much. With gas prices the way they are, SO and I are probably going to have to curtail our trips  I have Onstar with my car now, but I still always make sure I have a charged cell phone and/or am on a highway with call boxes. So far, so good (knock on wood).

SO is going to be taking me to the gun range so that I can also get comfortable with it, too, and learn to shoot better.

Avenger, I'm not sure if your post was directed at me, as I'm not sure where Red is, but I'm the one in California, and my gun is staying home :)

A knife carried in concelaed area, such as ankle sheath, or for a women with shorts or dress, simply in the purse.

Klein tools has a new "Utility Knife", that is simply NASTY!

My gf carries both pepper spray and a switchblade.

CP, do you have a link for the Klein knife? Sounds like a good birthday present.

Elctrical weapons are illegal in NEW JERSEY, and getting a permit to carry in NJ is next to impossible. All bets are off for this matter in Atlantic city

You can by some pepper spray but thats about it.

I sometimes carry pepper spray.

LOL I also carry a utility knife, I have this stanly fat max extreme knife I carry everywhere, its pretty intimidating, though i usually just carry it cause its handy. (Dead link: http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=149170)

This reminded me of my youngest daughter who was maybe 15 at the time when we attended a 4th of July parade where ice cream scoops were being handed out; a nice one with a metal scooper and pretty pearl looking handle. She stuck it in her purse and it is still there today several years later. It gives her security knowing she could whip it out and bonk some idiot on the head.

Hi RorySF,

I live in the Midwest area and gas prices are round $3.59 a gallon right now. My car gets maybe 30 MPG and my motorcycle gets 54 MPG but there's still too much snow and ice around for me to take it out yet as I live in a rural area and have to travel on gravel roads.

I am currently traveling 5 days a week and sometimes more. So I really am driving a lot and try to stay over when I can cuz my back and arse get to hurting from the constant driving and sitting at the bj tables.

Good luck and have fun at the shooting range. Sounds like you have it all together and take all the precautions you can to keep safe…keep up the good work and good luck playing.

zoomie,

I am envious that your g.f. has a switchblade.

I miss the Italian [stiletto] switchblade that I had once had.

The basic problem is that they are illegal, and courts treat
them as illegal concealed weapons on par with a handgun.

I really really wish that I could obtain a new (or old) one.

A switchblade knife has a blade that is spring-loaded.
That is distinguished from the (legal) "gravity knife"
which opens by a whip-like action of the hand.

Switchblade, ballistic knife, brass knuckles are 3 weapons with a bad history, and if you get caught with those things the police and courts will make an example of you.

If you are male and can use your hands to begin with, a kubotan is an excellent choice.

After reading a current post about “hustlers and safety” I decided to post my situation. Being a female and traveling alone to various casinos at times I feel extremely vulnerable going to the parking lot to my car or even in the hotel elevator.

My purse is either clipped to my jean belt loops or a purse with a long strap to comfortably wear it strapped across my torso so either way it doesn't come off easy.

Yes, I could go to the parking valet but refuse to for numerous reasons. I try to stay near groups of people and lock my car doors immediately upon getting into it. I park under lights and am aware of my surroundings at all times. (I can even have security walk me out but never have)

I have had young studs hit on me stating their ride wasn’t ready to leave, his ride left him or his ride is in the room with a girl, etc. but I am there for one reason only…to make money not get involved in a one nighter with a total stranger who may rob me blind or worse! :yikes:

I am actually contemplating getting a “permit to carry” to ease some tension of traveling alone. Are there other women out there in the same situation, and if so, how do you handle it?

Thanks, Red
After noticing that you also reside in the midwest, I'm considering waving my normal fee for protective services for you. Please note that I said "considering" and this would be a rare exception.

Bodyguard eh? Sounds like an exciting job....despite the fact that is actually really boring I bet. I had an Uncle and a Cousin that were bouncers at one point or another.

Of course the cousin was 6'4" 240 pounds and could bench over 400 pounds.....got a chair broken over his head once, so he broke his fist punching the guy.

None of that nonsense is much compared to actual trained self defense and professional security work, but it exists because I wrote it and clicked post.

It was $3.95 when I filled up yesterday. I get good gas mileage, but still.

Do you do all that traveling to various casinos to play blackjack or am I reading your post incorrectly  Are you a professional blackjack player?

That serrated duct knife is nice! Sadly, in my case, I would most likely end up getting disarmed. I do have to say that if I felt the need to take something like that with me when I go to a casino, I might as well just have security escort me to my car.

In any event, I look forward to hearing of some of your blackjack adventures and those of others :)
