Sometimes a game is not in progress at the moment, or someone is in your seat, etc. But trying to bring up your downtime by counting is usually not the wisest idea, in my opinion.

This is a really interesting point and probably warrants another thread.

What factors do you consider when deciding whether to 'bide time' by counting? The casinos I play in are typically small, where doing nothing can stand out.

My decision is usually very circumstantial but I would be interested to hear what other people's thought processes are on this.

If you have a stronger play available, biding time by counting is a terrible, terrible idea. What a horrible shame to get thrown out (or draw heat) for counting and leave behind the stronger play! I can't think of a circumstance where it would be a good idea.

If you can't look natural doing nothing, I'd suggest some slow, intermittent, low-mid-stakes play nearby while you wait for your opportunity. You can (likely) afford the short time of -EV. But there should be plenty of ways to look natural while waiting.

It's painful to do, but I've occasionally put in a few minutes on a penny slot while waiting around. Wonging +EV slots can be even better, but it can possibly backfire if you're under suspicion and surveillance sees you doing this. Most casinos have a bar near the main floor.
