Counting unused decks

Hey guys,
I'm trying to decide if I want to learn the Hi Lo counting system and I can't get one answer I need: Part of converting to the true count is knowing how many decks haven't been used. How do I figure out how many haven't been used? Also, what do I do in a single deck game?

Any help is much appreciated.

I haven't really gotten around to doing this, but here's what I'ma gonna do one of these days to get really good at deck estimation:

Buy eight decks of cards. Pick up n cards and put them down in a stack. Write down how many you think there are.

Then, put that stack on a digital scale. See how your estimated weight compares to the correct (number of cards) x (grams/card).

That gives you the number of cards in the discard pile. You need to subtract that from your total to get your number of cards in the shoe.
