dealer says "Checks play"

Just wondering when the dealer announces 'checks play' if someone has 100+ in chips on that hand. What is the purpose of this? Is it just to alert the pit that a big bet is out there, and to perhaps draw heat, or have the pit pay closer attention to this bettor?

also, what is the difference between a floorman and a pitboss?

Checks play

I believe this practice varies from place to place. While playing at a $10 table I once saw a dealer call "checks play" when a player had $75 in his circle. In this situation you also hear "black action" when a black chip goes down. Unless I'm wrong, these can only serve the purpose of alerting the pit to watch the player closer. Sorry, I don't know how duties differ between a floorman and pit boss. I think the pit boss has supervision over more than one floorman, though.

As tribute said, this will depend on the casino. I remember playing at the Western where they would call out “Checks play” for any bet that was $25 or lager. It all depends on the casino’s “choke point.”

The only reason the dealers say that is because they are required to let the pit know when someone is betting above a certain amount. The pit wants to know who is betting the money so that they can become “friendly” with them. It’s standard procedure and nothing to be worried about.

A floorman is a pit boss wannabe. They are directly below the pit bosses and are usually in charge of the most boring parts of the job (tons of paperwork). That leaves the pit bosses free to socialize with the customers, hit on the hot women, harass the dealers, and occasionally watch the tables.

Also, keep in mind that the floor person in charge of a table must account for each black chip, therefore the alert of "black-action" alerts the floor person that there will be a play that he must account for. You will also hear "black-out" as the dealer pays you in black chips.... for the same reason.

I suppose that successful ratholing of black chips could drive a floorperson wild!

How to piss off a floorman

That is why ratholing of black chips is generally not a good idea and if caught the floor will probably credit you with every single black chip they can not account for and also look for a reason to get back at you.
Rathole the green.
