Did I do the right thing

I was playing at a Tunica casino in a 6-deck game. The true count was down to -5 (I know I should have not even been playing the hand, but it was the last hand in the shoe and the dealer was already thinking I had a serious bladder infection from all my bathroom trips). I was dealt an 11 against the dealer's 9. Although I have no index to back it up, this seemed to me to be a poor double opportunity with the drastically negative count. When I did not double, everyone at the table asked why, including my wife who knew I was counting! Sure enough, my next hit was a 3, and the next a 5, for 19. The dealer had a low card in the hole (a 5 I think), and busted on his hit. I was playing third base and saved the hand for the whole table, so all of the sudden I go from idiot to hero!

So, who would anyone have done the same thing as I did?

No I would have doubled down on the hand in spite of the -5 count. Glad you saved the table though:)

I had that identical scenario play out last night. I've only not doubled on that hand one other time when it was appropriate. Doesnt happen much since im usually not playing when it is taht negative.

You made the correct decision, but for the wrong reason. Unless you know that you are beyond the index point you should not deviate from BS. Otherwise you are just following hunches like the rest of the gamblers. Granted you will be making more accurate hunches, but they do not constitute proper play.

You're obviously a smart player since your intuition was right about not doubling in such a negative count, but don't let your intuition guide your play. Follow proper BS, then look up the index number when you get home. If it is a worthwhile one then add it to your arsenal for next time.

Hmmm, what counting system were you using? Reason I ask is that with KO for example, -5 is only one less than the Key Count. The "index" for 11 vs 9 isn't even listed. That's not to say there isn't an indice for that count in KO, but only that it's not in the book.

I use Renzey's Kiss III count but you can find more indexes in other books like professional BJ and adopt them to your own counting system.

Look at the back of the book, they have all of the indexes, or the KO Full charts.

EDIT: Nevermind, for 6 decks they dont have the index for 11v9.

Probably because he uses a TC not RC system.

You're probably correct ETG....just wanted a qualification because it could make quite a difference.
He's correct. -5 is the approximate HL index departure for 11v.9 double or just hit. At exactly -5 its a coin toss and I would typically opt to hit. zg

Is this going to work?

Hey guys, I only started playing BJ about a year ago after reading The Worlds greatest BJ book. what may or may not be a problem is I learned the strategy tables for Hi Opt1 then after about a year of play I switched to Hi Low count but still using Hi Opt matrix #s. Is it worth the extra effort to learn the Hi Low matrix #s? I switched to Hi Low count because I read somewhere that it is be
tter for 6d than Hi Opt.

Cheers
