Do you guys split 10s when the count calls for it? I've read that a lot of people don't because of the obvious heat this could/would generate. So wanted to hear your guys' take.

and what about taking even money on a blackjack with a dealer A up when the count is high?

I do too; the place I frequent isn't in NV, PA or AC, so the heat is really low. I don't want to say that the place is completely ignorant of advantage play, it's just not very high on their list of concerns around here. The knowledge and training of the staff is adequate to provide me with a blackjack playing experience, but I've yet to feel any unwanted attention.

I do. A lot of people split tens in the place I play, most of them are not AP. People just called you greedy basters, not thinking you are counters.

I've found that too many card counters are shortsighted vig-hounds. EVERY AP's answer to this question SHOULD be: It depends.

It depends upon the casino, the pit crew, the dealer, sometimes even the other players at the table(!), how HIGH the count is (borderline counts yield very little added EV), how long I've been at the table, how much longer am I planning on staying at the table, whether I'm winning or losing - and by how much; etc., etc. I can probably think of a couple dozen more determining factors.

But how could taking even money in a high count POSSIBLY cause a problem? :confused: If THAT causes heat; that means that you've been picked off LONG before THIS hand ever came up!

I just love to get a reaction by spltting 10's! Im only do it during a +EV, of course. And I have won most of the hands I did it on.

One night, in a S.Cal Indian store, I had this uptight Chinese woman dealer, I split the 10's, hit BJ and 20, won both hands, and she glares at me and says:
"You do that again, and I kick your ass".

Well, a bit later, I did it again, and all these stoic Chinese ploppies howled with laughter! I stood up, and bent over to the dealer, and said; "OK lady, kick my ass!" It was so funny!

The pit critter came over to check out all the commotion, and had to replace the dealer, as she was so livid!

The new dealer came in, and wiped everyone off the table in 10 minutes!
21, BJ, 20, 21, BJ, 20, 21, like that! MECHANIC!!!!:devil:

Yes, if I remember to do it. For some reason this is the only play I have trouble realizing I have until it is past. I am working on it but the opportunity is so rare it is tough to practice making the move.

I don't split tens because it is so rare in the stores I play for anyone to split tens that it attracts too much attention. I think I'd be handed my walking papers pretty quickly. The few times I've played with a guy who split tens everyone at the table was so livid they made a huge scene and basically ostracized him from the table. The players were pissed, the dealer was pissed and the pit came over and stood over his shoulder until he bailed. If I make it to other stores where this is more common and acceptable then I will split tens given the right count.

I''ve occasionally split the first hand of the shoe agianst 6 if the PC is watching.

Then the dealer gives you a little more time on future decisons and does not autotmatically pass you by on each pair of 10's.

Yes, but I do it on a risk averse index.

Also almost always take a long break or take off after I do it.

I do it when the count calls for it. The play is too powerful to give up just to evade heat. Besides there are plays that create just as much heat but you do more often, like surrendering in some places, winning insurance bets, some sidebets.

Though heat isn't an issue for any AP with half a brain where I play, I still like to practice my acting :cool:. I seem to give off a know-nothing vibe (even among ploppies who really seem to -know nothing-) and I just allow that to work for my alibi each time I make a move like splitting tens. My dumbass pulls a move you should never do (yadda yadda...), talks some **** about luck or my 'right to winning' or 'paying homage to the card gods' and make my move. People groan at how silly I sound and I make more money than they wish they could. Just dumb luck? Cool with me, brah.

Right... so do you x2 down against an A 9 if/when a count calls for it? Are you more or less risky than the fool who splits tens?

Yes, especially when I'm expecting an Ace. Also, did I mention I double A-Ts and refuse to get paid a BJ?
