Doubling 8 vs. anything?

I just got hit with a large dose of ploppy advice, but what threw me the most was a dealer (who in general seemed to know his BS), who was insisted that doubling down with hard 8 vs poor dealer cards (roughtly 3-6) was a good strategy move.

The games at this joint were 6d, H17, LS, DAS. The basic strategy engine seems to agree with me. So, two questions:

1) Is this even a close call? (like 16 vs 10, which is razor thin)

2) Could this be confused from common single-deck strategy? (they do have a 6:5 single deck game that I presume he also dealt)

there are some index departures for example double 8v6 at +1 and 8v5 at +3
but i wouldn't call that as razor thin as 16v10.
been my experience that some dealers spout some pretty poor advice.

With a 3 or 4 up for the dealer, you have a winning hand by hitting and a losing hand by doubling down. With 5 or 6 you win less by doubling, and it isn't even close.

And it's also nice to know that I was at a casino full of dope-smokers last night.

In a SD game the correct BS is to double on 8 vs 5,6. As Mr. Frog mentioned, the indices in a 6D game are a bit higher. It is very rare to double an 8 vs 2-4 since it requires a very high count.

It sounds like they let the dealers smoke dope too!

Where is this casino? I could care less about the BJ, but what about the comps and are they rolled or loose? I mean, do I need to bring a pipe?
