Downtown Vegas Report

Just got back from a week in Vegas. Stayed at the Fitz. Terrible games there. Most of the games payed 6:5, even the 8-deck! Needless to say, I did not play a nickel. Played some at the California because my wife liked it there. 2-deck, DAS, $5 min. Penetration varied by dealer--many gave only 50% but found one that gave 70%. Best games I found were at the El Cortez. They had a single deck game paying 3:2 with no DAS and Double 10 and 11 only. Best game was the double deck. DAS, double any first two cards, and, best of all, they had one of those discard racks that had a notch for the cut card. All dealers cutting at 80%!. El Cortez also had rookie dealers who made a LOT of mistakes (both for and against the player--you have to watch very carefully). Overall came out a couple of hundred units up.

EC was double any two on single deck.
Is there anyplace downtown (or anywhere in town for that matter) other than ElCo that has single deck real blackjack-meaning double on any 2 and 3-2 for BJ?

Sorry techster,

Your estimation of the notched 80% penetration is just plain wrong.
Its not that far off. The DD cutoff is 75%, but if the red card comes out early in the hand, you get more than 80% penetrstion. Not sure what the SD is, but i've been told it's 75%.

In my experience, the notch that looks like 75% is probably 67%

Examine the discard rack.

If it is 75% then 1/4 of the cards [26] are cut out.

If it is 67% then 1/3 of the cards [34] are cut out.

The 8 card difference will mean an additional round - or TWO if heads-up.

Of course, this segues into a discussion of the evil "cut-card effect"

when I was there a year ago it was 66% pen. I counted the actual number of cards that came out. many people seem to make this wrong estimation for some reason. I was told by a few members that some strip casinos were offering 75%. when I got there, they were all 66%.

it's fairly easy for me to eyeball the pen now. if you can't do that, please just count the number of cards that come out to play, and stop spreading too good to be true info.

Need glasses?

Last time I checked 66% was about 2/3 and 75% was exactly 3/4. That is a substantial difference that is quite obvious if you can see at all!

104 cards in a DD shoe. If the red card was placed at the 2/3 mark, and comes out early in the round, you'll get another fifteen or twenty cards or so that round with a full table. So if the Red card was the 67th card in the shoe, you end up with about 80 to 85 out of 104 cards dealt. The only way you get 66% percent penetration is if the red card is the next to last card dealt that round.
Or do you measure penetration a different way?

If you're asking me, it depends on what I'm penetrating.

I personally will never play DD at a full table. I will play with 2 other players, or 3 other players if there extremely good rules and extremely good pen. 66%doesn't qualify. Cards after the cut card only affect playing decisions. Betting level is established before the round begins. For these reasons, I measure penetration by placement of the cut card.

You beat me to it.

I know east coast guys salivate at the thought of a DD game (recall how Trop AC's 4D game became a counter convention) , but in my experience, a good shoe game is just as good, if not better, and gives you the advantage of additional longevity, less heat, more hands per hour (less shuffling), etc.
