First Time I ever did this...

This happened Sunday and I'm still laughing about it. Sitting at the bj table playing heads up with a gal dealer I have gotten to know from past employment, ect. Anyway, we we talking and laughing as she was dealing and I was counting...yep, I did it..."minus four" came out of my mouth and we both laughed for ten minutes about it. She doesn't care, never said a word to me and won't say anything to anyone but in all of my playing and carrying on conversations the count has never ever slipped out of my mouth. It was just hilarious; guess you had to have been there! :grin:

yesmiard, glad it didn't affect you negatively. Sometimes I do mumble under my breath the count as a way to remember the count, and surprised I never out loud said it inadvertently - came close sometimes

When the count is zero I use the term "even" in my head instead of zero. Three times in 11 years I have slipped up and said the word "even" but I've never slipped up and said a number. There must be some explanation behind that.

It's because "even" is a word we use in all kinds of contexts, even when we don't realize it. (See?)

I've never recited the count in English, but was passing numbers to a partner in a European language not often heard in casinos, and the Asian dealer started reading my hand totals in that language. So much for that plan.

In my head I use "ZIP" for even (zero) and "MY" for minus.

In case I accidentally say "Zip" I can add "zipppity doo da."

If I say "My two ..." I can add "... o'clock appointment. Almost forgot that"

I too have learned an foreign language for passing numbers and have heard it once locally even before I put it in practice. Two guys were conversing in their native language and I could actually decipher the numbers at least; wasn't helpful to me at all though Just when you think you are one step ahead of everyone else, ship happens

Invent your own blackjack language. Nobody will know. Just have an answer prepared for what language it is. It will look like one of those old SNL skits where Belushi plays a samari. Sounds like it might be fun. I am easily amused though.

We should all learn Navajo, the classic code language. The names of the numbers in all the languages has always interested me; they mean the same thing in every culture and there is no reason to change them, but they change, and that gives information on the evolution of language.

Really though, you don't want to do too much cloak-and-dagger. It's better to speak openly than to get caught signaling or using code.

Pretty much. In the old days I used to just announce the number to my partner joining the table straight away, but in the context of something actually happening on the felt (i.e. look, dealer got a 7!). I never found I had to wait long to have the opportunity to do this naturally.
