Hi-low Ace not counted as -1?

I just started working on high-low counting a couple weeks ago and am getting it down quicker than I expected! But I just ran across some forum posts saying an Ace should NOT be counted as -1.This doesn't make sense to me. The player wants a lot of aces in the deck so it makes sense they would be counted as negative when leaving the deck.

Can anyone give me some insight as to why some systems don't count aces as -1? Which is more effective? Thanks.

In Hi-Lo, the ace is counted as -1. Some counts though don't count the ace. Instead they suggest a side count.
