In search of advice

Hi all:
I'm just starting out in serious blackjack and i don't really know too much yet, but a lot of the things i read are saying that its very hard to get an edge over the house in todays game and that you need a lot of money. I am willing to put in the time and hard work to learn card counting, but only if i can make a profit from it. So anyone out there who has done the work and practices card counting: Do you actually make money at it? Is it worth all the time and effort? How much money should i plan on starting with? How much can i expect to make? What is the most effective card counting system? I'd like as much input as possible. Thanks in advance to anybody who replies.

Even playing perfect basic strategy will not beat the house edge over time.
You must learn to count to ever have a chance, and then you will only have a slight advantage. Then standard deviation pokes it ugly head up and robs you in high counts. To win in Blackjack you must have determination, perserverence, nerves of steel, longevity, and a sufficient bankroll to weather the ups and downs that inevitably will come. ( I'm sure there are a few additional qualities that would also help.) Make sure you are playing a decent game with decent rules. Read some good books and practice a lot. Fred Renzey is probably my favorite writer. This site also has tremendous resources.

Read everything you can get your hands on. Start by searching this site for your specific questions. All of the answers are here. Practice counting, basic strategy like there is no tomorrow then go back and do it again. Once you have that down perfect you can start losing your money to the casinos :eek: The casino setting is quite different than practicing at home...you WILL make mistakes there that will throw you off track. Once you get to a point where you can keep the count in a casino, play perfect basic strategy and bet appropriately you can start to get some money back.

Don't mean to be such a downer but it is not a simple as it may seem. Can it be done? YES. Is it easy? Absolutely NOT. Is it worth the time and effort? If you enjoy the game it is. Are you gonna get rich fast? NO, but if you have a huge bank roll you might do pretty darn good :D
