I've got zen down, and friend has hi-lo

down, but wants to move onto a better count, I was curious as to whether having him learn a different count could would help us out in different situations if we were to play together.

Eg. I do zen for the high betting correlation and maybe have him do the 10 count for Insurance bets?

Playing together will improve the game, but you are better off playing at different tables.

Yes. The value of two people playing separately is greater that playing together at one table, in general. This is because of the risk correlation - you can bet bigger to the combined BR when you play at separate tables. zg
