Think of it this way. I'll use KISS III as an example since I used to use it.

KISS III - IRC 9
Bet ramp starts at 20
KISS III counts black 2's and 3-7 +1, 10-A -1.

If you were true counting, how many cards would it take to get a true count of +2 at the beginning of a 6 deck shoe assuming using a count like Hi Lo? Answer: 11 (not 12, just because it'll be one less by the time you got all the cards out.)

For a 6 Deck Shoe your Initial Running Count of KISS III is 9. It takes 11 cards to get to 20. So you know you have a +2 true count.

Now what would be your initial running count after clearing a deck? Since you counted 2 more + cards than negative it has now jumped to 11.

So at 5 decks in the initial running count would now be 11. At 5 decks how many + cards will it take to get a true count of +2? 9 (once again because of the fact of how many cards it will take before you hit the +9.) KISS III takes 9 cards to get to 20.

See where this is going? All unbalanced counts work similar to this in one way or another. The problem is that the farther away from that running count of 20 you are the less accurate your count is. Keep this in mind if you plan on playing games that will take you into negative counts a lot such as double deck.
