Long Road Ahead

#1
Hi all, first post and entirely new to AP, I'll start with a bit of a back story. My sister is due to marry a nice american fella within the next few years and while they were holidaying in New Zealand (my home country) her partner mentioned a trip to Vegas if we could make it over for the wedding.
Not having a clue about house edge etc at the time I thought it would be a great idea, travel to Vegas throw some cash around like I was living the high life and walk away with well over double what I came with.
Reality set in once I started researching casino games and after reading most of the pages on Wizardofodds.com found that Blackjack with the correct strategy offered the best odds.

Anyway enough about that... What I'm really after is a basic run down on a lot of the definitions and words you guys (the pros) seem to be throwing around and possibly links to pages explaining them. Things like +EV, Kelly, Half Kelly etc. I'm dead keen on learning to count cards and given the circumstances by the time I make it to Vegas will have a bank roll of about 5k which I wont be too fussed about losing (from my understanding a Hail Marry strategy would suit me?) and should be proficient at counting.

On a side note I won't be attending any casino's in NZ due the the fact they use CSM's, is it a good idea to jump straight into the action when I make it to the City of Sin? Or should I be practicing my counting in real life before I leave BUT at a guaranteed lose because of these CSM's

Thanks in advance!

There is no use "practicing" counting on CSM's....it's impossible. Invest in software....IE: Casino Verti to practice and become proficient before your trek to LV. Best of success.

Don't practice counting on CSM's, but if you wanted, you could practice Basic Strategy whilst flat-betting. Are all casinos in NZ currently owned by Skycity?

Don't think so mate, there's Skycity in Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch. Dunedin's a one off operated by Dunedin Casinos Management but I don't know there Blackjack conditions. There's also Lasseters Wharf but again I don't know if CSM's are in use.

By practicing my counting on tables with CSM's I was thinking it'd give me a good insight into what level I need to be at with a real dealer in front on me, drunk patrons to my left and right and my missus nagging in my ear (even if it did mean I was at a 100% disadvantage)

From the Frequently Asked Questions thread:

Q: What are all those little acronyms like H17 DAS LS? What is Wonging? What is a CSM?
A: You can look up any unknown words of phrases here:

There actually *is* one useful insight possible from counting down a csm...if you should continually get ever higher plus counts, that never ever come down, you are playing against a shorted shoe! ;)
