Hi all, first i must say its great to see this message board up and running again. I have read through years of posts on here and picked up heaps of helpful info aswell as enjoying the fun banter between the members. I have learnt basic strategy, high-low, illustrious 18, fab 4 plus a few extra indices. In regards to deck estimation i have a question about the brands of cards most casinos use these days. I have been informed that most casinos now use Aristocrat, Paulson and Cartamundi cards as they are a little cheaper than Bee. Are these cards the same thickness or if not, is there much difference? I'm guessing the reason why nobody has replied to this thread is because it's actually a loaded question. I don't know what the industry standard for Casino playing cards are but for the casinos here in Minnesota they use Bee playing cards. If you're able to get ahold of the playing cards from your nearest casino I would do that first. And yes, card thicknesses will change from manufacturer to manufacturer but your goal is to calibrate your eyes to adjust for the different thicknesses. I know that sounds super difficult but in all reality it's super simple. Like I said it's extremely hard to explain but if you practice your deck estimation with multiple decks from different manufacturers you'll be able to gauge the decks in the discard tray more accurately. Keep on practicing that deck estimation because without it, you won't have a true Count and true counts are where you make your money.

I can't comment on these exact brands but card thickness definitely varies from casino to casino, generally by how long the cards have been in play for. It's no big deal, because for the most part counting is an activity that is fairly forgiving of errors, if you estimate 4 decks have been dealt but actually 3.5 have it is not likely to destroy your profitability. Usually after playing a few shoes you will get the hang of it for a particular casino and figure out some little tricks by looking at how much the completed shoe fills up of the discard tray. Some casinos use discard trays of varying sizes from shoe to shoe so stay alert. A play all strategy has an advantage here in that you can get used to estimating decks remaining when you are betting the minimum.

I have been practicing with bee and paulson cards. The bee cards are a little thicker. When you stand 6 decks of each side by side there is just over a third of a deck difference. My eyes have adjusted after seeing the full 6 decks in the discard tray a few times. I am guessing with different brands of cards and differences of upto 3/4 deck difference, it wouldnt take long for your eyes to adjust either after seeing them in the discard tray a few times.

Cards vary in thickness, and can vary WILDLY after being in use, humidity, etc.

As you play, try to pay attention to the decks you're playing with, and be willing to make changes to your deck estimation as you go.
