Other AP's talking about counts to the dealer???

So, I'm playing the other night and two fella's sit down. I quickly notice that they aren't ploppies. About twenty minutes later they are talking out loud about the true count and talking to the dealer about how to beat the game... The pit boss just sat there and watched all three of us play for a few hours until they closed for the evening. No warnings, nothing... Is this even close to normal?

Anecdotal, but at one casino I was visiting recently, I was chatting up the dealers as I always do. There weren't many folks around, so the pit boss was mostly hanging around my table. I didn't get the sense that he was watching my play as much as he was just trying to be around where the people were. As things went, I ended up chatting a lot with him too while playing.

A few times when I'd have a hand that I could go either way with, I'd be coy and ask his opinion on it. Normally he'd say one thing or the other, and I'd act on his advice seeing that it would have been a coin toss for me anyway. A few times when his eyes hadn't been on the cards, though, when asked, he'd respond with phrases like, "I don't know what cards have come out" or "I don't know what's left in the deck." He also made references to "you guys" (directed at me) and how he wonders how we have "patience to make money this way." It goes without saying I never did acknowledge what he was obviously alluding to, but it made me kind of uncomfortable nonetheless. The thought did cross my mind that he was trying to figure out whether I was counting or not, but I really can't imagine a scenario in which I respond with acknowledgement before he shouts, "Ha! Got you!" and gives me the boot.

I'm obviously still fairly new to all of this, so I'm just as curious as OP; is this normal in some places? Is this some kind of trap, or do some pit personnel just not give a crap about red and green chip APs?

It is my guess that casinos welcome new card counters into crappy games with open arms. Most people just aren't capable of going through hundreds of hours of ups and downs without blowing up.

Liberal SD and DD are probably protected a lot more...

heh

I play a single deck game as well where the heat is seemingly slim-to-nothing and the pit boss just talked with the dealers to pass time. One night, one of the younger dealers was talking about playing basic strategy and then about card counting like it was the same thing and nothing more, but while spouting contempt for the job he worked at. I feigned ignorance and just finished up and left shortly after, in no rush at all.

Ploppies will talk about counting sometimes, so I make it a point to talk about it as much as they do. Don't freeze in horror when someone brings up the subject, that is a tell. Instead respond like you have heard of it, act a mix of curious and dismissive, like most civilians are.

Yes counting does come up occasionally at the tables. Gotta fit in and not squirm. Sometimes it's not easy when a ploppy comments LOUDLY about your great fortune of betting so much and getting a BJ or a double.

Most don't believe it can be done anyway, so just go with the bull-sh*t

I have heard "They're out there, you know" at the table before. I did my nods and "mhmm"s and "that's very interesting"s while "figuring out" if I should hit or stand this time around on my 16v10. I love knowing those guys just don't have a clue.

I've encountered astute ploppies way more than astute pits :) Probably because no one else besides the dealer is constantly watching your hands, or maybe its just even a stopped watch is right twice a day.

Old black lady ploppy when I took insurance "Umm hmm. He knows sum'tim'"
