Overheard in Vegas

#1
Just returned from a 4-day trip to Vegas, and just wanted to share some things I heard. These are all actual things people said.

"You always know who the counters are, because they all wear sunglasses, so the casino can't see them looking at everyone else's cards."

"Always split tens if the dealers has had a blackjack in the last three hands."

"The best time to play is late in the shift, because the more times a shoe has been dealt, the more in favor of the player it is."

"Never play slots during a shift change, because that's when the casino is counting its money, and they rig the slots so that they won't pay off during that time."

"Only play when there are an odd number of players at the table, because an even number favors the dealer."

"Never surrender, because that just means you're afraid to play."

"Always surrender a fifteen or sixteen against a seven or above, because the casino will give you better comps."

"Always play at 7:00 am, because that's when they use the weakest dealers."

"If you tell the concierge at the Hard Rock that you want tickets to a 'special' show, they'll get you a hooker."

As always, Vegas was great fun.

There are a few kernals of truth hidden in there, altough the reasons are false.
You will get better comps by surrendering your 15/16 against a seven or above. It will also destroy your expected results.
In many casinos, the weakest dealers do work the graveyard shift and by 7Am are tired and more likely to make mistakes.

Overheard

"The dealer wins 85% percent of the time on the first hand of the shoe"

"Surrender? Never take what the casino offers you"

"Basic Strategy just tells you how to lose"

One of my all-time favorites. An Asian gentlemen i was playing with "I don't mind shuffle machines but they do favor the white people"

"I've won 85 times in a row since last year"

Could be an AP camo remark. In most the games I play in the eye would not bother watching my game unless the PC called their attention to me. I use camo not only in my play, but in my remarks at the table, so the pit doesn't ask for an evaluation. But I don't split tens as a rule, even when it's to my advantage. It's a real attention getter.

My favorite: Guy splits face cards against dealers' five, and gets another face card. The dealer says "You can split again if you wish". The guy gets a puzzled look on his face and says to the dealer "Why would I want to split a winning hand?"

This is how I pick up many of MY camo statements. Who says you can't learn from an idiot?

"I just watch whoever is winning and bet what they bet. " (It might pay off if they're watching an AP.)

"Count cards? I can't remember my last hand, let alone six decks!"

"You're doing a great job at third base. You know how to save the tens for the dealer to bust."

"With all those little cards, I knew a ten was coming!"

"If you keep doubling your bet, you have to win eventually." (True, if you have enough money and there isn't a table maximum.)

"If we all work together, we can beat this game."

"We all have to be on the same wavelength to win."

"Winning comes in waves. All you have to do is get in on a good wave."

"I can tell when a table isn't going to be a winner."

"If you bet high on your winning hands, you can beat the house at blackjack." (Duh!)

"I almost never double down on a hard 12."

"Always figure the dealer has a ten in the hole." (If the dealer has a ten showing, that would mean you should hit hard 19.)

"I'm going to bet high. I'm due to win a hand." (Gambler's fallacy.)

"This can't keep happening." (No, only until you're broke. lol)

That is a good way to try and explain to new players about why they shouldn't hit against bust cards

Why would you be trying to explain anything to another player in the first place? What good can come from it? Give advice that works and you get noticed as a skilled player. give good advice that doesn't work and not only do you get noticed as a skilled player, but you got some newbie mad at you for causing him to lose.

My favorite is "always split/double against an ace" because there is no hole card, and when the dealer gets a BJ only the original bet is taken... which is 30% of the time? LOALLALAOL:laugh:

Because I don't want this person whose first time it is playing to feel like a total idiot when everyone at the table yells at them over and over for hitting against bust cards.

Hmm yeah I think it is a good plan. Remember when you first started playing? Did you immediately know BS? Probably not. Would have been helpful if someone would give you some tips

This is probably not what Dye meant, but I've had several occasions to explain something to a new player; my friends get curious about my AP stuff and several have actually asked me to teach them to play.

Sounds like the whole table is giving him tips. How does he decide your BS tips are any better than the voodoo ones. Again, all you are doing is calling attention to yourself.
If you are playing with a friend, thats another matter, but why bother with a stranger.

"The best time to play is late in the shift, because the more times a shoe has been dealt, the more in favor of the player it is."

There is possibly some truth to this.

Why on earth would that be true?

The dealer's are beginning to get tired & more prone to mistakes.

Actually, there are also a few other reasons why this sometimes is true, but shouldn't be discussed openly on this board. The wrong people could be listening.

I misunderstood you. I thought you were referring to some change in the mix of the cards due to repeated shuffling.

Okay I understand. But what if he is actually asking you for advice? I mean the pit obviously knows you know how to play BS so if you were like "I don't care play however you want" I would think this would come off very rude
