I was thinking of trying playing with a 1-5 spread SD. I would bet one unit until the count hit 6+ then bet five units. Would this draw a lot of heat? Since I wouldn't be changing my bet too often they wouldn't be watching me closely. I might be totally wrong, wanted to know what you guys think of this approach.
 
It will look very suspicious if you are making 1-unit bets 95% of the time then suddenly jump to a 5-unit bet for the last hand before the shuffle. You may actually get less heat if you follow a standard betting ramp because the casino will be used to seeing you vary your bets like a regular gambler does. Also, your variance (in relation to your EV) will be much smaller if you follow a proportional betting scheme.

Yes, it only works if you play heads up? Casinos still are bad at detecting it?

I was just at the casino a few days ago and I think I seen someone using the "Grifter's Gambit" at an adjacent table. He would somtimes bet 3 hands of 25 or 50, and then all of a sudden he would bet the table max on 1 hand. I'm not completely sure he was actually counting since I didnt check the count, but his betting looked like it was the grifters gambit style. The pit was very interested in him at first since his action was pretty big for that casino, but they seemed to leave him alone after a while. Either he was just a bad player, or he was a counter and the pit wasnt on the that betting style.

That depends on your bankroll. If you have a small bankroll then you will be waiting until a higher TC to jump to your high bet. This is similar to the “when to Wong in” situation. If you are using a healthy bet spread (like 1-8 or more) then you will want to jump in around +1. If you are using a smaller bet spread, or even flat betting, then you might be waiting until +2 or +3 to enter the same game.

I remember reading about how Ken Uston’s team had such a large bankroll that they were already making table-limit max bets. As their bankroll grew they couldn’t raise their betting level so they started betting the table max at lower TCs. That way they were getting more money on the table and increasing their EV even though their max bet couldn’t change. At one point I think their bankroll was so large that they were making table max bets whenever the TC turned positive. Man, that must have been fun! :D

This technique is not as optimal as using a proper bet ramp, but it can be an effective way to get a good win rate using a small bankroll and/or small bet spread.

Will this draw more heat? I was thinking of trying it with a 1-3 spread jumping up to 3u when it turns positive.
 
So most people in a SD game if say they're spreading 1-5 jump to 5 as soon as the TC reaches +1 or +2 depending on when they get the advantage, which means there is no ramping of the bet.
 
It depends partially on BR. Also pene and rules.

I might do it like this:

- = 1
0 = 2
1 = 3
2 = 5

On a good 1D I prefer GGambit.

There is also Skalansky Gambit: Place toBet off the top and keep placing topBet regardless of count going minus IF YOU WIN. Minus deck once you lose drop to minBet. Shuffle repeat. zg
