That game is not beatable with card counting. You can do it, but it won't give you much of an advantage. They need to deal more cards. Otherwise you should expect to lose money every time you play.

I thought we already figured out the house edge for your game:

It means that you can double after you split. Forexample, if you split a pair of eights and get a 3 on one you can double on that 11. This is answered in the Frequently Asked Questions thread:

Q: What are all those little acronyms like H17 DAS LS? What is Wonging? What is a CSM?
A: You can look up any unknown words of phrases here:

I believe Atlantic City NJ is the only place you cannot be banned for card counting. Anywhere else they can ask you to stop playing. However, someone with a gambling problem (addiction) can be put on an exclusion list that will not allow them to play in any casino. The casinos will not allow that person to play and they will take away his winnings if he sneaks in.

and how much you need for that?
The dealer sometimes gives more or less.

Are you playing a shoe game, or a double deck game, or a single deck game?

To clarify Sonny's answer, almost any game with a "memory" can be beat with a sufficiently high bet spread. The only question is how high of a spread you need - whether you'd be allowed to bet it, whether you could afford to bet it, and whether you can afford to lose it if you bet it.

With poor penetration, high counts will come out less often, but when they do, you can put down very large bets to overcome their scarcity. The only problem is that you will need a very large bankroll and you'll need to find a place where you can spread 1:20 or 1:50 without heat (which is very rare).

Even baccarat can be beaten if you have a few million dollars, find a table where you can spread 1:100,000, and have the patience to sit around and wait for a true count of +18.

Hey guys, I'm new here and have two questions.

1) When using the HiLo system, it would work the same way if I personally started at 10 instead of 0, right? That way I wouldnt have to remember any negative numbers. So 8 would be -2 and 12 would be +2.

2) Is rat holing generally frowned upon? I haven't even tried counting cards yet, but sometimes if I am doing well, I will put the original amount I started out with into my pocket, so I am never down, I only play from then on with winnings. Does this make me look suspicious?

Thanks guys!

Generally, yes it is, and the eye can see it. If you're an AP, its one more tell to the eye. Consider that fewer tells to the eye is better for longevity.

Yes. Remember to bump up all the indices as well.

It depends what you're ratholing. Squirreling away reds won't cause anyone to blink unless you do it every hand; greens might be noticable depending on where you are, and blacks are generally watched. Purples and yellows that appear and disappear will cause phone calls to be made, even at the cashier's cage.

Someone - Arnold Snyder, maybe - in a book once recommended that you rathole at the very beginning. Buy in for $300, and ask for one black, six greens, ten $1's, and the rest in red. Rathole a green immediately, and nobody will notice that one's missing with the big pile of multicolored chips in front of you. I've never done this but it sounds decent.

Along those lines, though, I almost always never keep my chips in neat stacks. One giant chip tower with different colors mixed in is a great way to make it impossible to eyeball how much I have.

Thanks for the advice! But couldn't I just give a handful of chips to my girlfriend and be like "go play some games"?

Sure. You can also just color up your buyin and stick it in your pocket. It's just a question of how closely they're watching you.

My personal advice is just to play short sessions and don't bother ratholing at all.
