Spread / Units / Bankroll

On another thread, Zengrifter and iHate17 advised increasing the bet spread on a DD game with 50% pen. to make it profitable (from 1-4 to more like 1-10). But if your max bet is already established based on bankroll, and if you are using a 1-5 unit spread, doesn't increasing the spread mean you would simply reduce your initial bet and add additional intervals and a higher count up to the max bet? I located an older thread where the distinction between inital bet and bet unit was discussed a bit. It pointed out that starting below your true unit amount in very negative counts is a reasonable technique, particularly if you're not wonging in. Am I right in thinking this method would also increase the count value at which you place your higher bets by a few points? Most of the DD games in my locale have 50-55% penetration.

Right. If you are spreading $25-$150 (1:6) and you want to increase to 1:10, you would end up spreading about $15-$150. The main idea is to bet as little as possible in negative/neutral situations and always bet proportionally in positive situations.

It might, but it probably won’t. Most of the time you will be making your max bet at +4 or +5 and that usually doesn’t change much. Your advantage at each TC is the same so your max bet probably won't change.

Unfortunately that is pretty standard in some casinos. That game is still beatable with a big spread and some good Wonging, but often times the shoe games are a much better option.
