how would you explain to the dealer why you are sitting at a table, but not playing while you are waiting to come in on a good count??? What excuses do yall use while waiting to come in on a good count???

If I'm backcounting, I never sit down until the count is right for me to play. Yes, sometimes I lose the opportunity if someone else grabs the seat, but those are the breaks.

Only time I'll sit and watch to hold a spot is a NMS table where you can't come in until the next shuffle.

i have never been to a casino yet so i don't know exactly how they are set up, but wouldn't it be too obvious if i just hung out around the table, or do people just stand around and watch a lot???

You could play with a partner and "watch them play" until the count is good. I see lots of folks doing that with a significant other, and the dealers hardly notice. Of course they'd be paying "seat rental" until the count is good, but you could split that cost and then both exploit the positive count.

Though where I play, I've never seen a dealer or pit question anyone just watching the game ..... although it's rude to use up a seat if it's busy.

just make sure your not walking back and forth to see every card that the dealer lays down. U want a table that is less busy anyway if you are counting.

Another idea that I have yet to try, but came up with is this. If your buddy isn't back counting or whatever and is just playing shuffle to shuffle. Maybe he's not counting, maybe he is. Sit down next to him and grumble about how much u have lost already playing blackjack and you wish you had more money to win it back.

Then when the count gets good, beg your friend to lend you the cash( that you already gave to him before entering the casino) so you can play.

Matts since it will be your first time in a casino, why don't you ditch the counting and just go sit down and play some basic strategy. Get the feel for the casino and the flow of the game without the stress of counting. The first time in a casino is going to be overwelming for your senses if you are trying to count and worrying if you are placing your double downs or insurance in the correct spots on the table. Just play a minimum table and flat bet. Who knows you may not even like it.

It's your money do what you want but I seriously suggest just playing basic the first time and be sure you have it down pat in the actual casino. Blackjack is a game of patience and the casinos will still be there the next time you go. It will be much easier to count the second time once you have familiarized yourself with atmosphere in a casino. Take baby steps with this game because mistakes can be costly and the first time counting is a struggle ask anyone on this board.
