Ran into 3 APs on my most recent trip to vegas, all of which im pretty sure were locals and non of which were card counters. JEEZUS Christ you guys! Take a shower, comb your hair, wear some decent cloths. At least try to look like you belong in the games your playing, betting the money you are! Are all of the vegas APs dirty and unkept?

sorry if i offend anyone but it was just a WTF moment for me.

I can assure you not all. ;) Are you speaking of the poker playing crowd? There seems to be a whole multitude of poker playing individuals like this ranging from sleeping in cars, buses, outdoors, to occasional comped rooms to renting one of the many weekly type motel/apartment places when they score. I have 2 aquaintances that consider themselves professional poker players. I consider both to be homeless.

I suppose at one time, before my time, there were many low level, $1, $2, $3 blackjack players living this life, but now they have migrated towards poker.

Homeless professional poker players association

There was a guy in AC that I ran into last summer that was essentially homeless, scoring the occasional comped room and there living out of a travel bag. He also knew other poker players that they would share comped accommodations, etc. I don't know what ever happened to him but he was scraping bottom and did things like ride these buses that run back and forth from AC to Chinatown NYC and somehow gain $10 profit out of it. Can you imagine riding a bus for 4 hours worth so you can get 10 bucks out of the deal?

Anyway, he somehow survived, bounced from poker room to poker room and fancied himself to be a great poker player... that had somehow run into a streak of bad luck is all? I saw one of Jason's posts about some of the poker players he has or had seen in Vegas sometime back and it made me think of this guy in AC, who was a full-fledged member of the homeless professional poker player's association, Atlantic City chapter of the organization.

I have often seen people scrounging about in Vegas (just like in AC) but could never definitively identify them with a particular game! Not until running into this guy in AC at least. It's unfair to stereotype though and I've seen "street people" in AC playing at slot machines and craps tables on occasion also. What stuck out about this particular guy was that he spent a lot of time in the poker rooms and at the poker tables, claimed that he made his living at poker and was quite good at it. He wandered into AC for a stay and never left town to go back home!

I've seen blackjack players that you would think they were homeless from all appearances but seemed to have no shortage of cash on hand.

I laugh when i read these stories of AP players with 10k in their pockets and they still take the bus, walk the streets, beg for a room, and almost steal food. Pretty sad, pathetic:eek:

Perhaps they know exactly how precarious their situation is?

A few years ago, while taking a Chinatown bus to AC, they insisted I let them stamp my hand, so I couldn't do a second roundtrip that day. It seemed some families were parking their senior citizen grandpparents on the bus all day. Two or three round trip a day seven days a week at $10 a pop adds up.

The one time I took the Greyhound from Philley to AC, I got around a ten dollar bonus and it was only about an hours ride. someting to think about idf I'm ever unemployed and destitute.

Pretty sure I'd think about putting a gun to my head before thinking about riding the bus for a few hours to get 10 bucks out of the deal.

I have personally encountered HUNDREDS of APs over the years and I can't recall seeing ANY of them who are as nasty as you describe (not counting the plethora of poker wannabes, of course; who are practically ALL a bunch of scumbuckets ).

Now I DO know of SOME people - myself included at times - who; for very good reason will purposely dress DOWN (though they DO take showers & comb their hair ).

Try walking down to the El Cortez at 3AM with 50K in your pocket, dressed to the 9's. Not smart! And the strip is not MUCH better! Las Vegas goes WAY out it's way to hide it's crime rate & pretend there's no problem, but don't believe it for one minute!

As far as the impression that shabby attire has on the PCs; down-dressing IS known to be a legitimate, tried & proven "look", especially for a local, who's going to be visiting the same places more often than an occasional visitor to the town. To them, you just look like another down-on-his-luck degenerate LOSER. (Of course; the degenerate "look" is probably not the BEST idea for some of the upscale clubs)

But as I've stated, every AP that I know of at least combs his hair, & doesn't STINK!

Next thing we know, you'll be telling us people are getting murdered on the pedestrian bridge. Or outside the casinos. Or even getting beaten to death inside the casinos!

What game were these APs playing? Without knowing that, this thread is kind of worthless.

they could be trying disguises to avoid detection by the casinos

takes all kinds to make the world go around

perhaps the AP world is just a microcosm of the greater world at large.
