Visiting Vegas from Australia

#1
Hi All,
I will be making the trek to Vegas with some friends mid Oct.
Where is a good place to stay?
Also, being an international visitor is it worth signing up for any rewards cards at the various casinos?

In addition to playing blackjack we also plan to hit some nightclubs. Any worth going to?

thanks

What's your budget?

What are your priorities? Food? Gambling Conditions? Location? What do you want in a hotel?

Its always worth signing up for a rewards card. Trust me.

After a hotel in a great location. Keeping in mind we wont have a car. Doesn't have to be the Ritz but not a ghetto motel either, something in the middle.
Thinking maybe Caesars?

Thanks for the hint about the rewards card.

Vegas

Yes, always sign up for casino cards and get whatever they're offering for new members.

Caesars Hotel/Casino is the most expensive of the Caesars properties. Caesars properties include Harrah's, Imperial Palace, and more. Many of these are centrally located. Caesars properties do not charge resort fees. A resort fee is a hidden charge that most Vegas hotels hit their guests with.

As for gambling, what are you looking for mate?

Vegas has a lot of clubs and they are very expensive from what I hear. Many of the posters here are decrepit(I mean dedicated!:)) gamblers so I don't know how much info. you'll get on partying here.

I'd recommend the MGM Grand, New York New York, or Monte Carlo. Or, if you're willing to spend a little more, the Mirage. The MGM casinos have better blackjack conditions than the Caesars properties.

Or, you might want to try out Treasure Island (TI). Their Player's Club rates all $10 bets or above. The MGM club only rates you at $25 or above.

Didn't know about resort fees, I will look out for that.
I'm keen to play some double deck games.
That's Ok lol, I'm sure we will find the nightspots alright!

What's the tipping policy with dealers? Is it expected? In Australia we never tip for anything and I always feel awkward when I go on holidays to usa because I am never sure how much I am suppose to tip for things.

I'll keep those in mind. I was only thinking Caesars because of the Hangover movie :p

Double deck blackjack... generally, to get that at MGM properties will require minimum bets of $25 or above. Aria and Mirage both have Double Deck where the dealer stands on a soft 17 at $25 in the mornings.

If you want cheaper double deck, but don't mind if the dealer hits a soft 17, try the off-strip and locals properties. The M Resort is south of the Strip but has $10 H17 double deck in a swanky joint.

Print out all the strategy cards you'll need. Go here: http://wizardofodds.com/blackjack

If you can't get double deck for cheap, consider switching to a shoe game. However, only play a shoe game if they allow doubling on any two cards, late surrender, and resplitting aces.

I'm an Australian too, so I know how you feel.

The accepted practice for tipping a dealer is to place a bet for the dealer. Just place a bet (of any size) down near your bet and say "bet for the dealer." Then play out the hand as usual.

My personal policy is that making 1 bet for the dealers at the end of every session you play at each casino you play at is perfectly fine. For instance, if I play 2 hours at Aria and 2 hours at Bellagio, at the end of each session I make a bet for the dealers (thus, I've made 2 bets for the dealers in total).

If you win big, increase the size of the bet for the dealers, or make more bets of the same size.

As for cocktail waitresses, a dollar-a-drink is a perfectly acceptable tip for main floor gamblers. My personal policy is one dollar when I place the order, and one dollar when I receive the drink, but I'm generous.

Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it.
Looking forward to the trip!
Have a blast.

My first Vegas trip was last year. I'm doing another this year.

You'll have a killer time if you play your cards right (literally and figuratively).

Yeah don't stay at Caesars. Over-priced and way too big.

Planet Hollywood is in a good spot. The Venetian/Palazzo are super nice but they are more north.

Visiting Vegas

G Day mate.
I am a POM and have visited Vegas on many occasions. As a tourist you want to be in the middle of it all so you have a choice of which way to go from day to day. Dependant upon your budget central hotels include Caesars, Bellagio, Paris, Planet Hollywood, Baly's. I am stopping at the Cosmopolitan in the new City Centre Complex from Oct 6th.

As for Double Deck games I was last there in Feb11, Paris has a decent game as does PH, NYNY, Cosmopolitan And the Aria. They have a cut in the discard tray which they use as the cut mark for consistancy. usually between 30-35 cards. Games arelike the guys have said $25 min and may rise to $50 at the week end when all the Americans come to drink and play

As for night clubs, again there are many but all expensive. The Palms has a night club that overlooks Vegas. MGM has a good one as does Caesars.
Enjoy.
A5teve.
PS Saw your Tri nations game against the All Blacks:cry: You have some work to do b4 next month:devil:

If "Human Nature" is at the Imperial Palace while you're there (they may be on tour) you should definitely see them

4 Australian guys who sing the greatest hits of Motown. Best show for that price range!

Indeed. They're a washed-up boy band. Since they've lost the ability to make fifteen-year-old-girls squeal with pseudosexual glee, they went off to Vegas to die.

Having a show at the Imperial Palace isn't exactly proof of monumental stardom, anyway.

It sound like Dye enjoyed them a lot. Probably worth considering. Among my favorite shows I have seen was Penn and Teller. I thought Sigreid and Roy sucked. For musical acts Tom Jones was amazing. Jimmy Buffet was a lot of fun. Not a fan of either but really liked the shows. Howie Mandel was hilarious. We had just landed in Vegas and were dead on our feet. He had everyone laughing so hard their sides hurt. Considering for us it was almost dawn back home that was quite a feat.

Wouldn't be the first time Yanks had fallen in love with something we wouldn't have a bar of back home; did we really need a 3rd Crocodile Dundee?

Vegas trip

Will be visiting Vegas for my 7th trip in 5 years in November. You should contact a host via the internet and organise transfers and rooms. If there are a few of you then consider sharing a suite.
We have stayed at Bellagio & Aria over the last few years and always get great service. My first trip I stayed at the Luxor which was OK, didn’t bet that much and only paid for 1 night out of 9.

Remember, to them you’re a new international guest, it's your first trip, they don't know your not a millionaire. You’ll probably get a free room at the Bellagio for 4 hours play at $50 min. I would recommend a MGM casino because you get points at any MGM property. Your welcome to PM me for a chat.
