Who was the millionaire card counter I once read about?

Maybe someone can help me out here.

I remember reading a story a while back about a multi-millionaire card counter who took some casino--I want to say it was MGM--for several million dollars. Supposedly he had been barred at every other casino in Vegas, but MGM would still let him play because they thought they could get him. So they would comp his private jet, room, food, etc. and would always set him up at a private table.

Eventually he had just won too much money and they barred him also. Anyone know who I'm talking about?

That has probably happened to many, many people to be honest.
Yeah, this was someone whose story and name made it into something I read. I assume it was a book, but I can't remember, but it was one of those stories that rises to some degree of prominence.

Send this blog to MythBusters and see if they can bankrupt MGM on a future episode. They love to prove myths wrong :cool2:

I can see it now:

BUSTED!

At least for the first several tries! I doubt if they have enough budget to get this one right. Or maybe Jamie can invent a pocket device to do all the work for them. lol

It was the late Kerry Packer. He wasn't a card counter, but he played BS and had a deal for 10% loss rebate. zg

$26 million -

That’s how much he won playing blackjack at the MGM Grand in 1997 over several days! One of the biggest wins if not the biggest in Vegas history. He bet $200,000, six hands at a time. If you’ve gambled you know it’s hard to get on a good run and beat the house. Well he cleaned them out big time. Plus they probably flew him privately for free and paid for his stay.

The funniest part was that this sunken MGM’s quarterly earnings report. He their stock price went down. Several casino executives were given the axe for bringing in this big “whale” (a high stakes gambler). Like they knew he was going to win that much. More likely than not, big whales lose their asses betting that much at a time.

He’s was banned from the MGM Grand after that. But when you win as a gambler, you’re certainly going to lose. Kerry Packer was a big loser too. He lost $20 million over three days at the Bellagio in 2000. He was also reported to have suffered the biggest losses ever sustained in the UK in September 1999, dropping $16.5 million at Crockfords casino in London.

Packer is famously quoted for an exchange in a poker tournament at the Stratosphere Casino, where a Texan oil investor was attempting to engage him in a game of poker. Upon the Texan saying "I'm worth $60,000,000!" Packer apparently pulled out a coin and asked nonchalantly, "heads or tails?", we'll flip double or nothing, referring to a $60,000,000 wager(according to Bob Stupak's biography).

Yeah, that sounds right. I wish I could remember where I read it though because I know my source said he was a card counter.

Kerry Packer... now dead

Kerry Packer, a fine blackjack player. He took a lot of risks, but could afford to with his huge publishing interests and income. I think he saw it more as sport than as a link to financial game - I might be wrong.

I'm not convinced he was a counter per-se but could be wrong. I've personally been banned from ALL UK land based casinos for card counting - they don't like it when you win... :-(
