Why is penetration so useful?

First guess is that you can get a lower denominator in your TC conversion. Seems reasonable.

Second guess is that if the count goes positive towards the end of the shoe you play more rounds at a high count.

But in both those situations if the count for a negative towards the end of the shoe good pen is just as likely to hurt you

True count frequencies.

You aren't required to play an entire shoe.

Yup, higher probabilities of seeing higher counts (the more cards you deal out, the more extreme counts can get - if you only dealt out one card, what possible RCs could you see? -1, 0, +1... now deal two cards out, you can see -2, -1, 0, +1, 2. Etc etc.). plus when you finally do get a juicy one, say 60% into the shoe, the cut card doesn't show it's ugly head as quickly to take that situation away from you

How can it hurt you? You are betting little to nothing for the low count.

Penetration is Everything

Along with seeing a wider range of TCs including positive ones, you also see more hands per hour because there is less time spent shuffling.

The casinos lose a lot in profits by not dealing deeper, they spend to much time shuffling!:joker::whip:

Not to mention having painfully slow dealers. At my local store the pen is usually quite acceptable however some of the dealers could be lapped by a turtle.

I don't get why management puts up with it. They must realize more hands per hour = more profit, but they still keep these morons.

Yesterday I had to leave a table with very good pen and move to one with worse (although still good) pen, but the speed was at least 50% faster. I was getting more and more irritated as he slowly dealt each card, looked around, watched the TV, rearranged his tray - the list was endless.

Yeah, but some of those slow dealers are slow in more ways than one. Some of them are slow at math and pay on pushes, etc. ;)
