It's a cover play. It will reduce your winrate, as you are betting more into a disadvantage. You need to decide whether it is worth it, based on your specific situation.

If the floor person thinks that your minimum bet is around 2 units he will see your spread as ½ of what it really is.

Agree with Flash here. If you consistently start each new deal with a one unit bet like a robot, you'll be too obvious. It's a pattern that's hard to miss. One tip that'll help though, is vary your initial bet. Start with one unit if the dealers last up card was a ten card, two units if it wasn't. It portrays a randomness while cutting your initial 2 unit bet by 31%.

To look erratic you could also really put it to them if the count rises on DD when you did place the higher first bet. I know overbetting is dangerous but I would think after a higher open bet you would walking a little taller and have a little more leeway to really put on the heat.
