Because of the limited amount of "stores" in my area, I've found it advantageous to make the dealers "like" me (not only by tipping but also using friendly conversation and smiles).
This approach, I'm sure, doesn't work as well in places with more surveillance.

I think that's why I lasted as long as I did. I tipped and got friendly with the dealers.

If this is shoe game, you can't win.
If this was a shoe game in Reno, the OP would never get banned with a 1-10 spread, due to poor rules in the area. So shoes are out and the OP was likely backed off from a single decker. He perhaps visited the same casino within a 3 month period, a cardinal sin to insure longevity as a winning card counter in Reno.

Was an 8D game.

$5 to 2 X $25.
What the literal hell!? On an 8-decker?

Best guess is that the pit boss is going through a costly divorce, after finding photos of his wife sleeping with you; and the surveillance guy lost his entire family to a mass murderer who is your doppelgänger; and you were Wonging like crazy and playing 16-hour sessions 5 days a week.

This place must be a sweat shop among sweat shops.

Maybe it was a ES, RSA, S17, BJ pays 2 to 1 game.

Getting backed off is not something to be happy about it is something to be sad a about.

By using diligence, opportunities can be found in 6 and even 8 deck games on occasion. I'll admit, usually not ideal circumstance.

In my area, all I have are 6 and 8 deck games, S17, DA2, DAS, NRSA, LS, BJ 3-2 and I and other AP's here win regularly on these games, but I use 1-15 spread on 6D and 1-20 on 8D. I agree that you can not win on 8D spreading 1-10 unless you are wonging.

Edit: BTW.....I got backed off 8 deck game after 120 playing hours at same store over 6 months with 1-20 spread. Taking them for $8500 ($6500 in 6 weeks) was just to much for them to tolerate.

Casinos are more corporatized nowadays, so trying to befriend casino personal will get you less than it used to.

Chatting it up with ploppies is the way to go.

If you're there with a regular customer and are friends with him, the casino might be scared to back you off if they think it will "disturb the peaceful exploitation" of a regular.Always aim for becoming friends with drunkards or big bettors if you can.

What is the casinos supposed to say to him if he asks why they kicked you out..."His play was undesirable, but don't worry you're play is still good, keep playing". Many times, the casino might assume you two are good friends, and if they kick you out they are going to lose the other guys play.

The casino want it to be as quiet as possible when they kick you out. Keep a close connection to the ploppies.

I think counters waste too much time and gas hopping casinos. I think first time counters should burn a joint out and get backed off purposely just to see what it's like. Too many players pussy foot around and get in way fewer hands than they think they're getting in.

Plus too many counters feel threatened by casino personnel. You should feel less nervous about getting back than casino personnel feel about doing it. Blackjack is a hard game to survive in the long run.

BTW I was spreading my bets from only one hand of $5 to two hands of $25. The back off was polite. I sat at a table and the pit boss told the dealer to wait for "Steve". A minute later I got the tap on the shoulder and he said "We need to talk." I got my chips and stepped away from the table. He said "I can't have you play here any more." I told him I understand. Then he said that I could play any other game but blackjack. I said that I understood. And that was it.

LOL.

Or you could have yelled out "I have a condition where my shoulder is sensitive to touch and causes extreme pain!!" and start writhing and groaning on the floor in pain. +EV!
