Talking while counting at the table

I'm trying to become comfortable talking at the table while counting. I saw one person said they sung along to a song while practicing alone. Others have said for the person dealing to you while practicing to ask you questions. Anything else? It's just repetition like everything else?
 
Talk short and brief.

I can give short answers.

Long answers would get me.

If you are about to give a long response, stack the number of chips in your right hand to what the current count is.

I keep my mouth running...but my talk is simply what the cards are doing,

"Come on, monkey!"

"Good luck, Ace!"

"Nice job! you got it"

Try to keep the convo focused on the cards...or making fun of the dealer.

No, I don't want to talk to you about what I do for a living!!!! Short answer, get it back on the cards!
 
There is no doubt, at least from my experiences, that one of the very early countermeasures, or not even a countermeasure, but just sort of a test, is for an otherwise, not that friendly pit person to suddenly become very chatting, seeeing if they can distract a counter or what not. I am not exactly sure what this is supposed to prove or not prove, but for whatever reason, it is something that occurs at some locations. For the player it is sort of a tip that your play has raised some interest even before more serious countermeasures and actions occur.

I had one several years ago that was just the opposite. I played a place (a place known by a single letter :D) regularly (too regularly) and usually at the same time of day, because I liked their buffet for lunch. One of the regular pit guys was very friendly towards me, because he was from Philadelphia, which we discussed on one occasion when I was wearing some Eagles gear. So he was always very friendly, chated up Philly sports and other things. So one day, I sit down and his demeanor has flipped 180 degrees. Just sending out unfriendly vibes. I was backed off a short time later which lead to a strange incident of a counter catcher that they employed trying to become very friendly and chatty with me as if I didn't know who and what he was. I won't go into that story again right now. :cool:

My point is, it is about reading people, especially pit "people".

I hate dealer asking why I just raised my bet. Even I told him or her the same answer again and again, he or she still asked again and again.

My answer is always, "It is gambling. There is no rational reason because it is irrational event."

Some might keep asking, "Then why most of times you won after raising your bet."

I replied, "I guess I am lucky."

Don't know why many Blackjack dealers don't know people count cards at BJ table.

In my experience, lots of dealers are card counters or former card counters at some level. They tend to be middle aged and older white guys. I would guess a dealer asking the questions you described was a card counter of former card counter and was just fishing to see if you would bite. And it isn't necessarily they are trying to "catch" you. Some just want to converse with a fellow card counter, but I wouldn't recommend doing so. :rolleyes:

I had a dealer "Bob" back in my AC days, at Harrah's. His first comment was innocent enough. I was playing at a table with a couple in their late 20's or so. The female said something like "Every time I raise my bet, I lose". Bob replied, "you should raise when this guy raises," jestering towards me. I didn't comment and pretended not to have any idea what he was talking about.

Next time I played with him and he was circulated in as the dealer, I didn't start with him, he said something like, "oh it's the card counter". That is when I knew he had some hostilities and figure if he would say that, he no doubt would say something to the pit on his way to and from break. THAT is what you have to watch for with these guys.

bad idea

casinos have technology that shows them different data on their screen including running count, true count etc. Stacking chips that matches counts will get you noticed very easily. A couple of casino have tech that is showing them players who are showing AP type play.
