When deciding what to bet, all I consider is what is within my risk of ruin (usually determined by half Kelly and ignoring heat). Even if I am only going to play this game for a short time (to a level way below my N0 say) this will not stop me from playing the game or betting below half Kelly...

Going without insurance will not stop you making money counting cards. Many other things will. Insurance to the non-counting player, if taken with typically high expectation hands (19, 20, 21), will reduce your variance at a cost to your EV. Given that, it is aptly named. Good luck.
