6D shoe penetration

My first post here. Love the forum. I'm trying my hand at counting after reading some of the threads here. I'm about halfway through BBIBJ and came across the topic of penetration which got me thinking... Some of the casinos here have preset slots in the side of the shoes where the dealer places the cut card. Does anyone know offhand what the penetration is on those shoes? 1 deck? 1.5 decks?

You have to eyeball it. Look at the discard tray right when the cut-card comes out, estimate how many decks are in there and account for how many cards hit the felt that round before the cut-card came out. Being able to distinguish between a stack of cards having 4 decks, 4.5 decks or 5 decks is an important skill to be able to have in this game. It is even more important if you start to use advanced strategies.

I have heard of notches on 6D that are preset for anything between 1.25 decks off to 2-decks off. Have never heard of one that is preset for 1-deck off.

Best,

The shoes I have seen have the back notch at 1.5d and the front at 2d. Someone will likely chime in and add that this varies based on the brand of cards used. I've never seen a difference in the thickness of the cards.

Welcome aboard and don't stop at BBIBJ. Read all that you can and keep in the back of your mind what year these books were published in. The games have changed a lot since most were written.

Aristocrat/Bee cards are significantly thicker than Gemaco or Cartamundi cards.

Watch closely (but try not to be obvious) when the dealer places the cut card. Is the dealer cutting one or one and a hlf decks? Maybe two decks? Hey-if it's two cut from a six decker say adios!
