auto ownership dangers of Las Vegas

As many of you know, after a year of living in Vegas without access to a vehicle (by choice) I recently remedied that situation. I now want to share with you one of the unforeseen dangers of auto ownership in Las Vegas. No I am not talking auto theft, which is big business here in the valley, nor car jacking which seems to be on the decline. I am talking productivity.

Case in point: This morning I set out on my local's run. A big circle around the valley hitting the outlying casinos. It starts and ends on the south end of town at M, which is worthy of a double stop and consists of one big clockwise circle. After a short but mildly successful first stop, I head up the Dean Martin (which is never crowded despite nearby traffic woes) to Silverton. Unproductive session there as usual, then jump on the Hiway circling west and north to Red Rock Casino. After a decent 45 minute session there the trouble begins. It is now mid day, sunny and a near perfect 68 degrees. Instead of jumping back on the freeway and continuing north, my Prius which has a mind of it's own heads due west toward Red Rock Canyon. I go along for the ride as it is one of my favorite spots. After a brief stop for supplies, the car finds a shady spot to park with a nice view and I head off for a hike. Lost day! work-wise anyway. My big day planned turns into about 50 hands played with EV of about $35.

Of course I am just having fun with the situation but in reality, with so many nice days weather-wise and we have about 275 of them, it is easy to get distracted and want to do other things. Sure 95-100+ degree days...they are definate casino days. Snowy, cold days....oh wait we don't have them. Rainy days...we don't have many of them either. So ya really gotta buckle down and be disciplined about playing here.

Looking ahead, it is supposed to be 90+ degree by the weekend so maybe I'll get some work done then.

KJ,

Give it a few more years and a 90 degree day will feel just right and anything below 80 will be too cold. I enjoy your posts. They are very helpful and informative. Thx.

You know what they say about "all work and no play" Jason. Guess in some way you deserved that break from the job.

BTW: You couldn't have picked a nicer place to play hookie from work, IMO.

Take an afternoon and drive down to Laughlin. Head East to Golden Valley and then take Old Route 66 thru Oatman to Golden Shores. Then head back to Laughlin and home. Trust me, you'll thank me .
For flatlanders from back east, you've never experianced a drive like this.I've done it about a dozen times now, and it still amazes me.

Are you spending 9 more days with the geriatric set in Laughlin? I've not been there but have always been told it's age 80 and up. I'm not at that threshold yet and neither are you!:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Laughlin skews older in the winter as many snowbirds flock there from the mid-west. Once the heat starts, it gets much younger. During the River Run, some 50-75,000 bikers are in town, few of which are on Medicare. The summer brings all sorts of water sports to the river and that also attracts a younger crowd.

Billy..Shad is rite.....not a lot of snowbirds left....bike weekis comingup pretty soon. Summer is a younger crowd..especially south of here an hour..But still Lake Mohave and the Colorado river draw anice crowd especially on weekends. Jetskis, boating, camping, and drunkeness abound on the riverwalk. The casinos have fairly decent entertainment also....
Shad also mentioned a while back his new favorite casino in Laughlin???? The Aquarius, you would love it Billy...decent VP......
Sage has been taking notes on the BJ conditions....I'm sure he will post on our trip thread sometime. Right now he's very busy...lol

The loop through the Mount Charleston area ain't half bad either. Not a bad way to get your feet in some snow just 15-30 minutes from downtown.

I'm sure you know that though, KJ...it's hard to miss!
