I decided to take advantage of a comped room offer last night, and after checking into our room, my wife and I headed to the tables. My wife has been practicing her counting the last few months, and with my help, has shown considerable improvement. I hope to use our husband/wife combo to strengthen advantage through additional camouflage.
Our first table was a $10 6D DAS RSA H17 table. We sat as the dealer was readying a new shoe, and I asked since it was my bday, if he could place the cut card X number of cards from the end for good luck. He called his PB over, and he approved the request for one shoe! We had an outstanding 92% pen! Anyway, after 45 minutes at the packed table, we were down a few units. Unfortunately, the next shoe was cut 70% and we decided to play in the HL room.
My favorite table is the $50 DD DAS RSA H17 table. We entered a few minutes after grave shift had taken over. The PB, who ended up being an attentive young woman, had her eye on me from the moment we entered. In the entire HL room, there was only one other player - at the $25 6D DAS RSA S17 game. I was excited to be able to play the pitch game alone, but nervous about how this PB would receive my action. The dealer had cut 70%, which is acceptable. I have been slowly improving a "dumb ploppy" act (i.e., asking the PB if I should do the knowingly wrong BS move, reciting ploppyisms). Anyway, I sat down with our chips from earlier, and began play. The PB never took her eye off of the cards, rarely making small talk.
I explained it was my Bday, and asked if she could help me make playing decisions as I was relatively new. After this she lightened up and began talking.
My wife and I had decided before entering the room that she would sit next to me, but not play. She would act like the worrisome wife, not wanting to lose many chips, and control the bankroll. Based on the TC, she would hand me different amounts of chips based on her "feelings". For my part, I would argue why she has to take so many risks, and pretend to not want to bet, throwing out ploppyisms. Of course, if my wife had determined the wrong bet size based on TC, I would take or reject chips based of my "feelings".
Halfway through the second shoe, after hitting to a 5 card 21 in a slightly negative count, the PB commented "You certainly don't seem like a card counter, and if you are, you're covering your plays very well. You've make a lot of good plays for a newbie."
My heart starting pounding and I had the urge to get up and leave as soon as I could. I had kept my spread relatively mild (1-6). I laughed and replied "I appreciate the compliment...I hope you don't mind if I brag to my friends that the casino thinks I'm an expert." The PB laughed a bit and said "have a good bday" and with that, she went over to watch the $25 game. Throughout the rest of the shoe, I would ask the PB what she would do on certain hands. At the end of the shoe, up quite a few units, she gave me a high five and said I had made her job easy that night and thanked me for not being disruptive.
I'll admit, I'm a little spooked at this incident as its the closest I've come to any heat yet.
Should I avoid graveyard shift with her? Or should I milk it under the assumption she believes I'm a lucky ploppy?
Thanks for listening and your comments are appreciated. :cool2:
