Hi, everyone. I've been reading the forum for a while as a lurker. It's been entertaining and informing-- so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring as a poster.
I've only recently started to play blackjack. I first stepped foot inside a casino maybe six months ago, when my brother staked me in a Hold 'Em Sit-N-Go tourney. Since there was a good hour's wait, we played some $5 blackjack. It was with a CSM, and I was flat betting without knowing any basic strategy, so needless to say, the casino ended up on top by about $30.
Well, ever since then I've been determined to get my money back.
Since then, I've progressed leaps and bounds as a player. I quickly came to the conclusion that randomly flat betting against a CSM is the equivillent of not covering your PIN at the ATM. I've learned basic strategy. I've practiced for countless hours at home with the same rules as the casino (6 decks though it may be 8, double any, no resplit aces, split to four, no surrender, stand on soft 17, 3:2bj, insurance 2-1). I've learned to card count (basic high-low, no side count, count down a deck in 30 seconds). I've practiced cover and heat deflection.
But there's something that still concerns me. Bet spreading. The more I think about it, and the more I read about 1-10 spreads, the more I think playing in Ontario isn't going to work.
Here in Ontario, there is a province mandated $100 table max. (I've been told about the province mandate, but I know for sure about the $100 max at the casino I go to). At the casino I go to, a "charity" casino called the Great Blue Heron, they use CSM on all the $5 and $10 tables, and even on some of the $15(!!!). I've seen $15/$100 tables that are shoe-dealt (as above), with ~75% pen. That means that at minimum, I have a $15 unit. Realistically, I'd have to look at a $25 unit. That means I have at best a 1-6 spread, and at worst a 1-4 spread.
Given that spread, I have to wonder-- can I hope for anything beyond a break-even?
The only other thing I can think of is to pass off a bunch of my chips to my brother, and tell him to "piggyback" my bets when I tell him to. But, in my mind, nothing shouts "heat" more than physically giving chips to someone and saying "bet with me, this is going to be good".
Any thoughts?
