forgive me if this is an obvious question, but when playing blackjack online, why don't you make a note of each card as it is played? as you reach the end of the shoe, you should know what cards are left, and bet accordingly?

Because there is no end of the shoe. Although on-line sites may use 8 decks, they "shuffle" after every single hand.

Global_Player.com has approximately 70% penetration in their 6 deck shoe Blackjack tournaments and I presume the same is so for all their online BJ shoe games. Their card discard tray indicates empty when a shuffle is made so you know when to start a new count.
I also presume there is no way to be 100% sure an online casino's software is not cheating but the same can be said about a spouse.

I am pretty sure they aren't giving 70 percent penetration in their blackjack games. At most online casinos give you 10 percent penetration. A couple months ago someone posted the penetration that they offered on their site. I think the best pen was 40-50%. 70% is probably only for tourneys.

It's a bit slim, but it's compensated a bit with Early Surrender Vs dealer 10, hits allowed on Aces and resplit on Aces. Halves Count might be the system, with a spread of 1-20. And of course one will have to wong out on negative counts. Another good thing is that the minimum bet is 10 cents.
