I think part of the issue here is terminology. The original post reference "good places to play at $5 minimums" which I assume meant 'good conditions'. LVBear with just a hint of a cranky attitude

responded "there is not much left" (at those limits). I see this type of response from the long time players all the time as it is quite apparent there is some frustration with current conditions as compared to conditions they used to have available years ago.
The second term that complicates things a bit is "playable". Many of these "long time players" don't accept the mediocre conditions currently available as "playable". But to someone like me, having begun my career at the time conditions were worsening (and even worse in my case, began playing AC for 5 years before moving to Vegas) these mediocre conditions are all I have ever known and "playable" by my standards.
Last year my younger brother began his blackjack career. I started him out playing at the red chip level playing $5 & $10 games, which he played for all of 2015. This year we moved him up to light green to black. So last year when he was playing $5 & 10 games, I had him playing a small rotation of games that were playable by my standard. Some of the games in that rotation were Downtown: El cortez (of course), the D, Golden Nugget at times downtown Grand. Strip or just off strip: Palms, Silver Seven, Hooters, Tropicana, Westgate. Off strip Local places: Eastside Cannery, Longhorn, Sam's town (weekend nights), Joker's Wild (Henderson), Fiesta-Henderson, sunset station, Green Valley Ranch, Red Rock, Palace Station (sweaty), Silverton, M resort, and South Point (very sweaty). I am sure I am forgetting some but these locations at times have what I considered playable low limit $5 games.
As for El Cortez. Everyone always says "good for low limit", but I have been playing EC regularly at the green to light black level, several times a week, since I moved to Vegas 7 years ago. Every year EC has been in my top 5 casinos as far a yearly results. Short sessions are a must, but they add up.
