Not for nothing, but in forty years, I've never heard anyone refer to "upper state New York". Just where did you go to school?
I think it must be just above upstate New York. :joker: :whip:

I had a similar experience when I started counting. It took many tries and going back to re-read relevant chapters in the books and help from some on this forum before I finally had some success.

It is not only important to know how to count in theory, but it takes experience to know how to do it in the real casino environment in real practice.
Yeah - I just tried my first counting session - lost it in the second hand - started having beer.

Some of you are right. Once you pass NYC limit, it is upstate. Upper state is the part of New York State closer to Canada than NYC.

Genius,

If you read your url reference closely, it does not support your above assertion. It states that to NY City dwellers, everything above the city is upstate, whereas to others in the state, upstate refers to only that portion of NY that is above Albany. It does not address upperstate.:eek::rolleyes::grin::whip: If anything, the inference is that upper NY is the same as upstate NY, but I've never heard anyone call it that {uppperstate NY). Do we have anyone from Rochester or other points north of NYC, and not western NY, who can weigh in?

Didn't you ask, "Where is Upper State New York?"

That is the first Google entry. Someone asked the same question back in 2003. If you want more answers, you should Google "Upper State New York" yourself.

That's okay. I live in upper state Virginia, only nobody calls it that. Nuff said.

It is not an uncommon expression. For example, there is "Upper Iowa University". I think there is a Division I or Division II school with the name of "Upper State University of something". I will pay attention when the college basketball season begins and report back.
It is a common expression. OTOH, upper state New York is not, nor is upper state Virginia.

Until you or someone can show otherwise, I'll stick with the popular expressions, upstate New York and northern Virginia, as well as, northern California, Texas panhandle, Florida panhandle, and northern Minnesota. The only upper that comes to mind is Upper Peninsula, but I'm sure there are more.

Commonly known here as simply "up North".
  Yup. And I like your perfect MW accent, or is that, lack of accent, as well.

Edit: Oops! Sorry. Let's get back on topic.
