Ok I know horses really aren't a casino game, but...

I am headed off to the horse races for the first time ever this weekend. Company party in one of the nice suites...food and drinks all paid for....should be a great time.

while there i plan on placing a few bets, but have NEVER made a bet on horses before. i was wondering if someone could give me some tips - what bets to avoid (sucker bets), how to pick, just anything really. any help will be appreciated.
