Newb Counters First Trips

First post for a newb counter. Just to give you a some background I have been playing BJ for over twenty years and consider myself a very good basic player. So about a year ago I decide to marry a very nice Chinese lady and in one of our trips we decide to stop in Macau (she had never seen me play BJ nor gamble ever. So she is deathly afraid that we will be in ruins in a couple of hours and in her mind all casino's are scams.

So after a couple of hours of pounding the CSM's at Lisboa's (one of the most spectacular rooms I have ever seen) for a couple three hours we are up about $2350HK (400US), she says well maybe gambling's not to bad after all. So we end up paying for our hotels and dinner for a couple nights and she is proud as a peacock and willfully tells her mother and sister how well we did. No big deal to me but the trip was typical from my experiences in the past.

So come to today and after several trips to casinos in the last year she has developed a love for the game. So me being the less bright one in the family say's well honey if you really want to due well at BJ you really must count cards. So yada we get all the books, ten right now and counting, software etc.

So one night at the table I said lets practice counting from the deck, so I am laying over the cards one on top of the other and me being old and bad eyes I count slower than molasses and she is just whipping right thru them like you would not believe. Interesting I am thinking, so I said well honey I turn them over and you count and let me time you. First run thru ever..... 50 seconds one error. mmmmmmmm interesting I am thinking. Second run 40 seconds no errors and she even tells me the last card. ding ding ding we have a winner.

So after many months of reading, practicing and counting we are ready to attack. So we wander down the local casino and the first day playing two and three hands we get down a touch but no big deal. The next day we leave recouping the loss and up about 120 units. Not to bad we think.

So needless to say we are full of confidence and in the next three trips we get hammered, down 300 units. O man this ain't any fun and she is devastated. We carefully analyze our play for these trips and look at possible areas of improvement and with the exception of maybe a handful of mistakes we think we played well but when you TC is 6-8 and the dealer is getting tens it is just going to be one of those trips. Unfortunately ours happened at the get-go just as we are starting into counting. She is very focused and I as well also count along with her so I know our HiLo count is accurate.

So while she is thinking maybe we should just go back to basic BJ I am looking to you guys in the know for some worldly advise for a couple newbs. Thanks for all of the great information on the site.

Marlin,

No one reading the above post has a clue as to the table conditions that
were encountered or where the casino(s) were.

Without same, your post is not worth the electrons that light our displays.

Losing a few hundred units is no big deal.
If you think that that indicates a hammering,
you are not really cut out for playing BJ.
Go back to playing C.S.M.s

Welcome, Marlin.

You've come to the right place if you want to learn and get solid advice. You have stumbled onto something very valuable, imo. Asian women can get away with murder at the table without a second glance. I've seen them do the craziest things and pc's dismiss them because of the stereotype.

As far as what to do and should you continue, realize that cc alone yields an advantage of maybe 1%. Because that advantage is so small, anything can and will happen in the short run so don't let losses scare you. Make sure you are sufficiently bankrolled to survive the downswings and if you're not prepared to lose frequently, this may not be suited for you. If you are going to go casinos anyway, why not arm yourself to at least minimize your losses? I say hang in there, evaluate your style of play and what your realistic goals are, comp hustling, br building or strictly entertainment and develop a style of play that suits your goal. One of your instant advantages is that you already have a teammate. Put that to good use and ask questions here and you will get good advice.

Ah if I was only born as a young asian lady or old black lady, I would be sitting in my mansion or driving around in my ferrari :)

Funny thing was, I was speaking to a young lady once who was trying to learn counting, and I never thought about this, she mentioned that one hard thing for them is that the guys try to talk to her too much and it distracts from her counting. So can't have everything.

Sorry for the oversight. We plan mostly in the Midwest, WV, Michigan, Indiana, PA, NY. S17, 8 decks, 75% penetration, ASM's. New counter so just expressing some general feedback from our first few trips. Still much more to learn. I am here for fun not to earn a living.

But that being said I am hardly frazzled by 300 units, given that any weekend you might find us wandering a marlin tournament where lets just say that most people don't earn a in a year for want it costs us just to enter. But the potential return is very nice and I am not a math expert to know those are damn good odds.

CSM's sorry not anymore you guys taught me too well.

Huh ? A "marlin tournament" ? You are still being a bit cryptic.

Are you saying that they hold cash tournaments for
deep-sea anglers competing to catch the heaviest marlin?

There is something wrong with your playing. My typical wining for a shoe session is about 40 units. It takes one or several hours to get there. Once you have placed the max bet, you have to leave the table at the end of the shoe. Or you will leave evidence that you are a counter at that casino.

If you play at $10 table, 300 units means you have won $3000 that evening. Is it what you mean?

The tourneys vary widely but basically yes to your answer. 10 to 40k to enter and first place 300k to 3.5 million to win. 40 to 150 boats. Not bad odds IF you find the fat girl.

PS in most places that money comes in green folding money in a paper bad.

Thanks for the advise. But we were down 300 after a couple days not up and I was just commiserating over our first couple outings. Great information you guys have here. Thanks
