I DVR'd Beating Vegas on National Geographic and found the show interesting. Makes me want to order an MIT tshirt for Vegas.

Anyways, they featured what's a team composed of the following roles.

The Backcounter
The Signaller
The Big Player
The Gorilla

Isn't the backcounter and the signaller doing the same thing?

And why do you want a gorilla on the team (boisterous, over the top character)? Is it to distract attention from the BP?

Some of those are pretty general terms. As you mentioned, some of those roles will overlap depending on the way the team is set up. Here is a basic definition of those terms:

Backcounter - Often called a Spotter. This player will count down the shoe either from behind the table or while playing. They will usually signal certain information to a BP, Gorilla, or other player(s).

Signaller - Sometimes called a Relay. This player signals information to other player(s). This may include the count, betting or playing information, hole card values, instructions (meet in the bathroom, leave the casino, change tables), etc.

Big Player - This player acts on the signals from the Spotter or Signaller (or both). They usually enter a hot shoe and place large bets while keeping the count on their own. They will therefore know the correct betting and playing decisions.

Gorilla - A Big Player who is not counting. They will need to follow signals in order to know how to bet and play and when to leave the table.

A team may employ any combination of these players, or quite a few that aren't listed above. The duties may change somewhat based on the needs of the team as well.
