On Tipping, the math says no but

Let's see. Which dealer should I tip? The one who tells the table I took his break card? How about the who berates me for not taking even money or the one who says I'm foolish for surrendering? May as well send the casino a check and save myself a trip. Right? Oh yeah, the one who blows by me without my hand signal because he thinks I should always stay on soft 18. The tip hustler or the dealer that "lets you win"? No thanks.

This represents a tiny percentage of all the decent hard working dealers out there but if tips are shared then it's a big fat zero from me.I once saw a guy win a $1 million side bet and stiff the dealers after the dealer who was harassing him suddenly became his best friend.

I agree. It's not on purpose. Even the best dealers make mistakes from time to time (and paying a push seems to be the most common one). Don't read more into it than is really there.

Zee, this thread has morphed into an interesting discussion among the adults. Go back to your room.
Most of my initiated threads do.

One of my favorite responses to this is, "Did you ever have a real job?"

Oh, absolutely mistakes happen. I probably see a payout mistake at least once a week. But I was recalling a few incidents, that while I can't swear were not "honest" mistakes, they made me feel uncomfortable. Enough so that I wanted to remove myself from the situation ASAP.

I hope you are talking about years ago and this is not something you still do regularly. There just is no benefit to this type of interaction. And while I am not looking for the dealer to be "my friend", there can be negative consequences to intentionally getting on his/her bad side. You are better off to keep that kind of comment to yourself. Think it to yourself.

Years ago I used to make those kind of "comeback" defensive comments to both dealers and other players (more on this in a moment). If someone, dealer or player would comment about plays, like anything from BS plays like standing 16 v 10, hitting 12 vs 3, even to splitting 10's, I had a standard response where I shot back "you have a 3.2 percent better chance of winning your hand if you hit or stand or split", whatever the case was. And I was even making up the "3.2" number. That almost always shut them up. Rarely a comeback.

But you know what else it does. It tells the dealer and more importantly any pit folks close enough to hear that you know at least a little something about this game. And that is really what they are trying to figure out and you are trying not to show.

Now-a-days, I stand on all my 16 vs 10's. (counter's basic strategy), so I hear even more comments that I used to, but you know that thing that 21forme likes to say...."there are other player's at the table?" That really is the best mentality and throw the "know it all" dealers right in there with the players.

I tip in moderation, and only when I know the floor will see it. If I have a bad experience with a dealer, that will stop my tipping for a few sessions. I'd guess most folks tip significantly more than they think.

How the hell do you win a $1 million side bet? Most of them I see are capped at $500. In a case where the payoff is 270-1, its still well under a million.

Super 4 Progressive Blackjack. A $5 side bet is required for a payout that is routinely mid to high 6 figures. There have been more than a few that have paid over a million dollars. It can be found in different casinos throughout the US and I think some in Canada have it.
