One deck strategy...confused

#1
The rules: 1 deck, H17, no das, no surrender, peek

Both ' The Wizard of odds' and 'blackjackinfo.com' give Stand 7,7 against dealer 10upcard. I don't get it stand 14 (7,7) against a 10? Why?

Also, it would be correct to double 5,3 and 4,4 against a 5 or 6 AND double 6-2 against a 5 but not against a 6?

I'll be in Vegas next week, I need to play it right. Any comments?

The peculiar case of (7,7) vs 10, in single deck:

The best card for you to draw is another 7, but there are only 2 sevens left. Also, the dealer is less likely to make a pat hand, because the shortage of remaining sevens means he'll make seventeen less often.

When the dealer has a ten showing, it is also quite likely that you could hit, not bust, but still lose the hand.

In this case, all these factors add up to make the correct play in this case to stand. By standing on this hand, you'll lose around 0.50974 of a bet on average. Hitting yields a loss of 0.51482 of a bet. It's a close call, but standing is better.

Yea, its just one of those little phenomena that you don't expect in BJ. For that same single deck game, 12v4 you stand. But if your 12 is made up of a 10 and a 2, you hit. That single 10 is enough to make the difference.

Thanks guys, I’m learning things! Here in Gatineau, Québec, Canada the casino NEVER has one deck games; I need to learn quickly. Basic strategy cards are great, but they don’t usually give out exceptions.

Whatever you do, DO NOT play single-deck games that pay 6 to 5 on BJ! You won't find any SD, 3 to 2 games on The Strip. Downtown has them, but only couple casinos.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advise. I intend to play at the El Cortez or the Four Queens. The spread at the Hacienda is to small (5$-200$). If I play a 1$ game, the Henderson or Fiesta Rancho are my choices so far.

Yep, wish me luck!

I just want to have fun and not leave my shirt behind. Fix gambling budget; winnings are welcomed!

Basic strategy for SD would have you just hit 6/2 vs 5 and 6, not double.

Shoot Kasi, you may be onto something lol . . . I got this tidbit from "BJ for Blood", table 4.3 . . . but I also know that you know what the hell you're talking about! :)

Can't find my copy but I'd guess that table would maybe be for an S17 SD game? lol.

It's only because I played alot of SD on the internet and got pretty familiar with alot of composition-dependent hands dealt off the top under different rule-sets lol.

No one needs to know a dam* thing or not when it comes to playing BS, total-dependent or composition-dependent, except the ability to match your rules to a BS, with all the information out there on it. Just don't play until you have confidence you have found the right BS for your rules :).

Too late to apply now, sorry, but I found a fair shake at the Railroad Pass Casino outside of Henderson on the way to Boulder City.

Having lived in Vegas for 7 years, and worked in B.C., I passed that casino perhaps a hundred times, but last week was the first time I stopped there.

Nice, old, warm & comfy feeling casino! imp

I don't hit 7,7 vs. 10 in single deck, but when the count is low, I always wonder if I should hit it. Anyone know the index using hilo?

I use -1 TC which should translate to -2 Hi-Lo.
