GRETEL Packer is trying to scale back her role in her brother's push into the US gaming market, fearing that it might expose her to unwanted scrutiny.

In a move that could sink Crown Limited's $2.7 billion deal in Nevada, casino mogul James Packer's sister wants to drop a licensing application before the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

Ms Packer and three others - whose identities are hidden behind trusts - have formally applied to have their names scratched from a list of investors applying for control of Pennsylvania's Meadows Racetrack and Casino.

Authorities in Pennsylvania say the move could derail Mr Packer's application to purchase the Meadows facility, whose parent company Cannery Casino Resorts in Nevada is the subject of the multi-billion takeover bid by Mr Packer's Crown Limited.

Crown's Cannery takeover - which has been approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Commission - can only proceed with a green light from officials in Pennsylvania who issue separate gaming licences for venues in that state.

Attorney Robert Krauss, for Ms Packer and the secret trusts, said privacy was more valuable than the Meadows bid.

"We believe we have the right to withdraw," Mr Krauss said at a weekend control board hearing in Pennsylvania.

"Privacy is more important to our clients than anything that might happen because they withdraw."

Board documents reveal Ms Packer and the trusts are seeking to withdraw their personal history disclosure forms lodged nine months ago over poker machine licences.

Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board spokesman Richard McGarvey said lawyers for the investors wanted to bail out to protect their privacy.

"They were concerns about privacy relating to background checks," Mr McGarvey said.

What does she have to hide? hmmmmmmmm?
