Record keeping

How do you guys keep your win/loss/playtime records organized - by game? location? do you keep comp benefits like matchplays as a separate tab? also, do you use excel or find another program to work better? Any suggestions appreciated!

I use google docs. I have the following tabs: Date, Result,Casino, Approx Hands, Approx Advantage, Average Bet, EV. Then I have tabs for what I was doing: Counting 21, 3cp, unnamed cool thing 1, unnamed cool thing 2, poker, other AP, weekly freeplay & promo cash, and the -EV stuff: gambling (recreational or for cover), and tips. I also have a big column for comments. It is a pretty good list, there are a few things I would change. Sometimes I keep great records, sometimes I am real lazy and just fill in the "results" column.

I use Excel. One tab to maintain the financial accounting, and many other tabs to document the sessions at each individual casino. The "by casino" tabs help me keep track of rule nuances, conditions, and other little things for future reference.

Google Spreadsheets/Docs are great. They offer the same functionality as Excel with the added benefit that you can access your document on any computer/mobile device in the world, even if it doesn't have Excel. Additionally, you can share the documents with anyone you wish, a feature that is highly beneficial for team play.

Google Docs. And in addition to games played and results, I keep track of how much time I spend in the casino scouting, as well as time spent doing nothing (eating, avoiding someone, waiting). You could really lump these two things together, but I like being able to really analyze things like that as a way to try to refine and improve my total time in the casino. I also keep track of tokes—those can add up, and it's helpful to make sure you're toking within your personal guidelines on a long-term basis. Also, like Zerg, I keep track of -EV play, but this is never for recreation for me! There will be times when you have to play -EV games, and it helps to figure out the effect this time has on the time you spend at that same game making +EV plays. A session where you won 160 units doesn't look so good when you look back and see that you played 300 minutes with an edge and 120 minutes without one, effectively canceling out more than 30% of your +EV from that session!

Actually, it's over 50%, assuming your edge on the game is about equal to the house edge in the -EV situations. There are a lot of factors there, and every situation is different (most notably you're probably playing more in +EV situations and less in -EV situations; welcome2cardcounting), but the point is you can't count those -EV situations just as a percentage of time, you have to also factor in how much money you expect to actually lose during that time.

Sounds like there are a lot of pluses to Google docs...anybody know if an Excel document can be converted to it easily?
Most of the time the "conversion" can be done seamlessly with copy/paste. I'm fairly certain both data and cell formulas get transferred.

Edit: I should also mention that if you send an Excel file to your Gmail inbox, you can open it as a Google Spreadsheet, effectively doing all the conversion work for you.
