Reno living conditions?

Personally, I preferred Vegas when I was in my 20's. My priorities were definitely different back then, but also Vegas was a completely different city in those days. Although it was a tourist attraction, it still maintained its Western town flavor. The Mob still controlled things and it's law enforcement naturally was impressive on and around the Strip. Traffic back then was not a big issue except weekends on the Strip. The casinos all over would offer $.99 breakfasts, $1.99 lunches and $3.99 dinners. It was definitely a bargain. Outside of Caesar's, MGM Grand, The Hilton and Trop, rooms were dirt cheap even on the Strip. Single deck BJ was dealt deep and most clubs offered surrender as well. Oh, The good 'ol days! The "standard" casinos such as The Stardust, Dunes, Sands, Circus and the Tropicana all exhibited their own theme without the gaudy over-the-top side shows of today
.

Hey Bob

Dont mean to derail this thread, but Im wondering how difficult it is/has been to play on a regular basis in a small sd'er town. Also, just loved reading you reflect on the good ol days of Vegas. Being a counter from Canada, reading that stuff is like a kid reading about a science fiction novel or something; gets you all excited, but you know personally you will never experience it. Thanks for the memories !

That certainly does help. Thanks for the good information.

Do you find that Reno provides you with most of the amenities of a larger city? Would you say it has a "youthful" vibe to it? Overall, would you say you enjoy living there?

As for snow, that doesn't bother me. As a matter of fact, I LIKE to see some snow in the winter. It's a treat for me since I grew up down South where you see snow about 2 days out of the year.
So have you burned out Wendover yet?

Not even close. There's TONS of opportunity there. It's more like I've burned out Salt Lake City.

Wendover's great but it's still an hour and a half away and I would prefer not to have to drive 3 hours round trip just to get my blackjack on. I would much prefer to drive 15 minutes, especially as I would like to hit the casinos 3x a week or so.

The Harold(')s Club Legacy

lol so what is Harold's club anyway?
For one familiar with Reno's history the story of Harold's Club is legendary. To put it in a nutshell, it is comparable to that of Binnion's Horseshoe. Lot's of history (60 years) in one building. It was originally built by Harold Smith and subsequently purchased by the one and only Howard Hughes and ended up finally in the hands of the Smiths' archrival Harrah's Inc.
Harold's was the first casino to employ women as dealers (very good idea!), opened a museum that depicted Indian life in the area and perhaps most memorably, old man was really dedicated to his customers, good cheap food, liberal games and he even had a policy of handing out $5 chips/coupons to the poor souls from the Bay Area for gas back home. That last gesture kept us pathetic college kids from S.F. coming back for more punishment time after time. It's those fond memories as well as their famous road signs which influenced me to memorialize it in my avitar.

Quick update. . .

I talked to a girl from Reno and she had some interesting opinions. All in all, she didn't seem to care too much for the place. She said that the fact that everything is brown and the lack of greenery causes depression in a lot of people. She also mentioned that a lot of the guys there have a hard time finding available women and usually end up having to venture over into California to find something acceptable.

Hmm. . .

That would be the entire state of Nevada .
I guess I thought that Reno was supposed to be a bit more naturally attractive and greener than, say, Vegas. Or at least is has appeared that way in the pictures I've seen. But maybe I'm wrong.

Well on the way out, can you pick me up a few sets of that magic Mormon underwear? Looks cool, but they wouldn't sell it to me. I asked for a pair for me and three of the female versions.

Man I wish I lived 1.5 hours from Wendover! It would be fun coming up with new ways to slow-play them.
