Putting all of the maths to one side for a moment, there's the pure and simple risk factor to consider. If playing splitting tens at TC+4 and +5 respectively, it'll be done with a max bet out. If you play a $10 table, and spread 1-16 would you really break up a hand of 20 with $160.00 on the felt? Same for doubling on soft 20. Could be an expensive decision. And that's without considering that doing so may start alarm bells ringing.
I think this is more about playing style and comfortable levels of risk than just applying the calcs. I've never yet done it, but am looking forward to the first time I do ! ! ! !
