Read books and practice at home first on CVBJ for 6 months. Then, get real life experience on $3/$5 tables and practice till you can count and carry out a conversation simultaneously (and not lose the count); all while acting like you're having a good time and you're not interested in the cards.

Not to be rude, but that's all it is.
if you stare at cards and don't talk and raise your bet suddenly, you might as well just scream out "IM A CARD COUNTER!" just go home and practice, or flat bet(at a good game) at the casino and chit chat and order drinks, and count.

You can practice doing just that. Here’s a low-tech method that worked for me:politcat said:
1. Imagine a dealer upcard. It doesn’t matter too much what it is.
2. Deal yourself a hand, and play it as you would against that upcard. Keep the count.
3. Continue to the end of the deck. Did you end up with the RC you should have?
4. Repeat until proficient. (Practice, practice, practice.)

My ACT, that some others have alluded to, is designed for many purposes, and cover is just one of the reasons. There is alot more going on that no one is aware of.
It was rather funny that I was playing with another AP, a few months ago, and he was at a table across from mine and I was in full blown ACT and he said all that the people at his table talked about was how nervous, jumpy and crazy I was and how they would be afraid to play at my table, even the dealer agreed,,:laugh: They said I must have a gambling problem:grin:

This may sound odd.....but between hands, and when dealers swap out etc...I seemed to lose count for a second.
My method? I have my hand on my leg with the plus count on it. If negitive, I put my hand under my leg with the count (on my fingers).
I play mostly double deck so it's pretty easy.....and if the count goes plus more than the fingers i have....I remember!!

This is where speed counting is better than hi and lo. You count only the low cards, from 2-6 after each hand is played and substract each player,including the dealer. If the count is 30 and there are 2 players, you substract 2 from 30, which 28.The count is 28. If there are 3 small cards played than the the count is 29,because 28+3=31-2=29. In order for the playerr to have the edge over the casino,the count has to reach 31 in all deck games. 2-4 deck games the count starts at 30,6 deck games the count starts at 27,8 deck games the count starts at 26. When you each 31 you have the edge over the casino.
When there is a pair, you substract 1 from the count, before you start counting.
You substract number of players even when there are no small cards. If your count is 32, and the next hand has no small cards,and there are 3 players,than the count is 29,because 32-3=29, the casino has the edge, because the count is under 31.
At 31 you bet two units. At 32,you bet 4 units or more.At 34 you take ins,when the dealer has an ace up. Stand on 16 against the dealer's 10 or surrender. Surrender 17 against the dealer's 9,10 and ace.

Harry, speed count isn't the only count that someone can barely look at the cards and count all of them.
