Vicksburg?!

I may have the opportunity to kill some time in Vicksburg, MS in the near future. It will only be about an hour drive from a project I'm working on.

Is it worth the trip? What should I know about it? Any must-sees or must-avoids?

Also, if I play full bore I can get my bets into "extremely chunky green" territory. And I don't have much of reputation for delicacy when I play a joint. What should I be warned of? Will the trip just turn into a contest to see which stores can bar me the fastest?

If you want to share something that's too sensitive for the public board, feel free to PM instead.

thx!

A brief history of vicksburg

Vicksburg is a very nice place its actually one of the first places where they had casinos, they called them hell's back then. They didnt get the river boats until the towns people who thought gambling was a sin and awful dragged a bunch of gamblers who were held up in a local "hell" outside and hung them right then and there. This then started the gamblers jumping on the river boats and traveling down river, gambling illegally in the cargo holds and anywhere they could hide. Now able to avoid the law by gambling only on the river and getting off in differnt towns guys started getting big games going and running croked games making alot of money. Soon the guys who ran the games started bribeing the river boat captains so they could use bigger areas of the boat and scam more people. These are the same type of river boats which are still in vicksburg today in which all the 5 casinos there reside..

Great place to play too

I was in Vicksburg before the casinos. I went to see the city at the heart of the longest siege in the Civil War. Strangely, the Mississippi river has flooded so often that its current course is far different from the river of the 1860s. Nice country to drive thru, not an awful lot of reasons to stop. i'd especially avoid the crossroads, round about midnite.

The Civil War Park is okay. I can think of several dozen I'd recommend before it, and as I said, I was there before the casinos. One thing that really surprised me is how small the "city" actually is.

Wait, there are degrees of hauntedness?

The battle ground is cool you can pay 8$ and give yourself your own tour in your car. I believe for like 15$ you can go on a tour with a guide and in one of there vehicles, but I went for my own tour and it was pretty nice. The casinos are nice down there and allthough small have good games. They have alot of DD and single deck, every place has one shoe game going at all times also (6 deck). The craps down there is great, they used to have 200x odds :eek::eek: yea not a typo 200x odds, and one dollar tables. Me being an AP craps player I was loving betting a dollar on the pass to back it up with 200 smackaroos on odds.LOL.
I was in vicksburg for over a week and stayed right in the center of town, I went down there specifically to go to vicksburg no where else. I will defenetly go back within a year or two, my girlfriend and I had a blast and both won alot of money. All i can say though is watch the cops down there, we were pulled over and searched by a drug K-9 for no good reason except i had a good chunk of cash in the center console within site of the cop. SO this guy pulls me over holds me up forever standing in the cold the then have a K-9 mess up my rental car with muddy paws and hair and ****, just to find nothing illegal at all, making the cops look like assholes, which is what they are down there assholes. This cop was pissed my suit cost about two weeks pay for him and that my girlfriend looks like a model and im from a state where we have dentists so we can keep all our teeth from rotting out, of course the fact that we dont start dipping chaw when were 10 years old up here in mass prob helps too, and it really pissed him off when he saw how much money i was carrying to just gamble with, hed prob feed his inbread family for 4 months with what i had ready to throw it away LOL. So because of the fact i make a decent living and dress well with a good looking girlfriend who dresses well, these cops had some sort of vendetta and were on a mission to arrest me for anything they could.Another thin i also loved it took four of them and a trainee doing a ride along to handle this situation of me sitting on the hood of the car,Like i was in some sort of drug induced rage .
SORRY I KINDA WENT OF RANTING THERE I GET A BIT WORKED UP THINKING ABOUT IT, I WAS SO PISSED I MEAN I WAS ABOUT AN HOUR OR 2 OFF THE PLANE ON MY VACA TRYING TO RELAX AND I START IT WITH THAT BULLSHIT.:flame::flame::flame:

It's a good venue. There can be heat, but you should last for your trip as long as you bounce between the stores a little bit. They're all within a couple of miles of each other.

But if you are backed off or barred do not attempt to return. You are in the deep South and attitudes about law enforcement are different than you may be used to and you do not want to get into any trouble with the police or anyone else in this part of the country. Take extra precautions.

You will be a whale there. That can be fun. Last time I played in Vicksburg I had a few big stacks of black in front of me for a while, and all the single women in the store who were around my age took turns sitting with me, making pleasant conversation and batting their eyelashes.

Why hell yeah, Easy. Don't you know that the El Cortez is more haunted than Binions? I hear that that the "spirits" there can even see through the walls and ceilings.:eek:

The Civil War stuff is definitely worth seeing. Also head downriver and see Natchez. This time of year it is spectacular.

As for the casinos, I have no idea. Never set foot in one in this town. Tunica is two hours north, and it is an excellent area for green chip play.

In my travels, I've found that simply flashing my driver's license and saying "It's okay, I'm from California," goes a long way towards mollifying irate law enforcement officers.

As in the movie 'Remember the Titans' "He's from California" sort of way?

The Skinny on Vicksburg

NO, it is not worth a trip if that trip entails long distances, airline travel, car rental, hotel, etc.

I spent a week there very recently.
There are 5 tiny casinos.
Most have only have about 2 -4 tables open during the week.
Expect slow dealers with slow games - due to "pairs" side bets.
I played all 5 casinos on days and swing shifts.
I never played grave, but I expected to find only 1 or 2 open tables.
Cigarette smoke abounds.
The stakes are VERY low.
Tables are virtually always full.
You will see almost exclusively $500 table limits with one place having $300 limits. Ameristar will, upon request, provide a $25 table IF and only if they have an additional dealer that they can "call in" for you or a momentarily empty table, a rare occurrence.

Green play will make you a whale - very worthy of being surveilled.
If you are from out-of-town you are an automatic heat target, especially if you are caucasian and without a drawl.
Why? There is NO tourist traffic at all.
Vicksburg is a small rural venue.
Everyone knows everyone else, pretty much.
Comp's are pretty much worthless.
There are no taxis.
You will need a car.
There is big HEAT.
You will be auto-sweated betting light green.

I have seen pit bosses and shift managers pull the discards and count down the game. Also, a pit critter with a pen in hand recording cards dealt, etc.

A friend (who posts here) was a whisker from being backed off very recently. At the time I think that he was spreading $10 to $60 at DD.

A player I was rooming with in a nearby town was "trespassed" twice within 10 days betting minimal green. He was "run out of town" His max bet was $150.

The game rules and penetration are very good, but as they fear losing a few hundred dollars they will take action against you rather quickly if you play well.

Well crap, now I have to go.
Your whaleness may give you some protection, like it does for me in small venues. Betting green and black, they are going to make damned sure you are a threat to them before they treat you rudely. I've spent a full day/night there at the BJ tables with no visible heat.

But most of that time, I wasn't counting.

If you are referring to the "crossroads" of highways 49 and 61 made famous in blues songs, it's not near Vicksburg. Try Clarksdale.
