If you're a card counter, please vote. I'm just curious to see how many counters really are math whizzes.

I'm doing a poll so your answer can be anonymous (hopefully.) This is the first time I'm doing a poll, so I hope it works...

If you want to brag, or comment, besides responding to the poll, feel free.
 
I don't think one has to be any kind of a math Wiz to count cards or be a card counter. Maybe it helps but u think it's a pre-requisite?

So far the stats seem to indicate that there's no mediocraty on this forum!

Something I already suspected!

No math is required for card counting. You can count with memorization alone.
 
It's been, um, 14 years or so, so I don't remember exactly, but I'm guessing in the upper 600's. They have probably rescaled the SATs a few times then.

So, it's a good score, but I was a good test-taker in school. I did much better on verbal, though, and I'm still pretty weak at arithmetic.
 
I took my SATs in 1975.I know I got an 1180,but don't remember the breakdown.I've been told that todays SATs are inflated by around 200 points.I Know that my score had me under consideration for the Military Academy,and helped me get into the schools of my choice while an 1180 today is fairly pedestrian.

I believe you're right. Not necessary, but helpful, especially to get pretty quick at it. However, there are some people who are just math-dumb, like a receptionist in my office who can't add 2 + 2 without a calculator, that never would be able to count.

A good example - I went to the bank the other day. I cashed a USPS MO for $473, asked for $27 back on a deposit and asked for all 100s. The teller was completely baffled asking how can she pay me in all hundreds.

I don't think you need to be a math wiz yet, having a solid foundation will help you in the beginning then, as ScottH said, its just memory recall to make decisions. The more you practice and play, the more second nature things will become obviously. For far to many people learning to count, math can be a big obstacle. It is middle school math but, if you have not used it for a long time, its a bit of a chore to get it back.
 
i scored 95%tile on the GRE quantitative(math) section.
didn't do so hot on the verbal :p
SATs were in the 700s i think. can't recall exactly.
 
can't vote never took the SAT

never took the SAT since i was a high school drop out going to college on the GI bill.
did get as far as differential equations and aced that course. never fealt as if i really understood the material though.
had the most trouble with triganometry and analytic geometry.

It's not too hard to do the simple arithmetic, BUT if you still find it too hard to do you can always go with an unbalances system which requires no math to use. You might need a simple understanding of math to understand what you are doing, but you won't have to DO any math at the table, how great is that?!
 
I got a 800...also took it sophmore year :D

never retook it even though I hate/suck at english, still good enough to get into the schools I wanted to
 
I dont remember exactly what i got on the SAT, but i do remember getting a 35 on the ACT (math section). By no means do you need to be a math wiz to learn to count but I think people who are more inclined to math and gambling are drawn to it. Counting and the early days of hacking seem to attract similar personality types.

I got in the 700's in both sections. Was 15 and drunk when I took it. Perhaps that was cheating and I would have scored worse if I was sober.

Hey I might not have been the smartest guy ever to go to my high schools, but I was the smartest guy ever to get expelled.
